Sign Short Message Service (SSMS) is acommunication and educational mobile application that is based onthe sign language alphabet. It provides the ability to communicatethrough messages in both fingerspelling and plain text. While atthe same time it is also an educational tool that can be used tolearn a sign language alphabet.The application currently includes 5 sign language alphabets.These are the American Sign Language (ASL), British Sign Language(BSL), French Sign Language (LSF), Greek Sign Language (GSL) andSouth African Sign Language (SASL).Despite the fact that there are various mobile service packagesfor Deaf people, these can still prove to be costly. SSMS main aimis to provide are more cost effective method of communication. SSMSmakes use of graphical messages (hand shapes, signs) that arecharged at normal SMS rates instead of MMS rates. The rates forsending an SSMS depend on the standard SMS rates of your cellularprovider.The application also aims to bridge the gap between Deaf andHearing cultures.
