Description

Omnicom's Track Locator provides those working on, or interestedin, the UK Rail Industry with a simple way to determine theircurrentlocation in the standard rail referencing system ofEngineering LineReference, Track Identifier and Mileage. Theapplication uses theAndroid Location Service and converts this toa railway referenceusing Omnicom's GeoModel of the rail network. The App links toGoogle Maps to show the current location on ascalable map. The Appallows the user to take a picture which isstamped with the currentuser location including Latitude,Longitude (of the currentlocation) and map matched ELR, Track ID,Mileage, Latitude,Longitude as well as the user location tomatched positiondifference. The images are saved to the Galleryfor easy access. Therail reference is only displayed once asuitable locationdetermination has been achieved. This iscurrently set at betterthan 100m. Please note that due to theaccuracy of the AndroidLocation Services correct determination ofTrack Identifier may notbe achieved. Notice to user of the currentversion. A number of youhave noted that the Track ID functionality(up/down/fast/slow etc)was removed with the last App update andthat you would like thisreinstated. Track ID was removed as adirect result of misuse of theApp by a user. Despite clearinstructions that the locationinformation was not to be reliedupon, it was, and could have led toa serious incident. NetworkRail requested that this function beremoved from the App wecomplied with this request. Users arereminded that the locationalaccuracy of GPS in mobile devices canvary widely due to a numberof factors and should not be used whenmaking decisions with safetyimplications. We are now working withNetwork Rail to reinstate theTrack ID functionality with suitablesafeguards against improperuse. We hope to release an updatedversion of the App in the nextfew months.
