Darts is a form of throwing game inwhichsmallmissiles are thrown at a circular dartboard fixed to awall.Though various boards and rules have been used in thepast,theterm "darts" usually now refers to a standardised gameinvolvingaspecific board design and set of rules.As well as being a professional competitive sport, dartsisatraditional pub game, commonly played in the UnitedKingdom,acrossthe Commonwealth, the Netherlands, Germany,Belgium,France,Republic of Ireland, the Scandinavian countries, theUnitedStates,and elsewhere.Darts were historically used in warfare inancienthistory;skirmishers used darts of varying sizes, similartominiaturejavelins. It was the practice of this skill thatdevelopedinto agame of skill. Before the First World War, pubs intheUnitedKingdom had dartboards made from solid blocks ofwood,usuallyelm.They had to be soaked overnight to heal the holes madebythedarts, and it was a messy business for the publican,althoughdartswas a popular game. This changed when a company calledNodor,whoseprimary business was making modelling clay (which hasnoodour,hence the name Nodor), started producing claydartboardsin1923.The clay dartboards never caught on, and Nodor switchedtomakingthe traditional elm dartboards that were popular atthetime.
