Andfinally, in 1965, after several yearsofpreparatory study, atrans-denominational and internationalgroupof scholars met atPalos Heights, Illinois and decided tostartworking on your project– determination not simply adaptanexisting English version of theBible, but to start fromscratchwith the best available manuscriptsin the originallanguages.Their conclusion was endorsed by a largenumber of churchleaderswho met in Chicago in 1966.A self-governing body of fifteen biblical scholars, theCommitteeonBible translation (CBT) was formed and chargedwithresponsibilityfor the version and in 1968 the Bible Society ofNewYork (who laterbecame the International Bible Society andthenBiblica) generouslyundertook the financial sponsorship oftheproject. The translationof each book was assigned totranslationteams, each consisting oftwo translators of lead, twoconsultantsand a stylistic consultantif necessary. The initialtranslationsproduced by these teams werecarefully examined andreviewed byeditorial boards of five scholarscheck them against theoriginaltexts and evaluate them forcomprehensibility. Each text wasthensubjected to a GeneralCommittee of eight to twelve membersbeforebeing distributed toselected external critics and to allmembersof CBT in preparationfor a final review. Samples ofthetranslation were tested forclarity and ease of readingwithpastors, students, scholars and layacross the entire rangeofaudiences. Perhaps no other translationhas undergone athoroughprocess of review and revision. From thebeginning, the NIVhastried to bring modern readers of the Bible asclosely aspossibleto the experience of early readers Bible:providing thebestpossible blend of transparency to originaldocuments andunderstandthe original meaning in every verse. Withthis clarity offocus,however, came to the realization that thework to translatethe NIVwould never truly complete. As newdiscoveries have been madeaboutthe biblical world and itslanguages, and as the rules ofEnglishusage developed and changedover time, the NIV would alsoneed tochange to keep true to itsoriginal vision.And so in the original paper NIV, provision was made notonlytorelease periodic updates to the text, but also tocreateamechanism for continuous monitoring of changesinbiblicalscholarship and use of English.
