The Fairchild Republic A-10 ThunderboltII is anAmerican twin-engine, straight-wing jet aircraft developedbyFairchild-Republic in the early 1970s. The only United StatesAirForce aircraft designed solely for close air support ofgroundforces, the A-10 was built to attack tanks, armored vehicles,andother ground targets with limited air defenses. The A-10wasdesigned around the GAU-8 Avenger, a 30 mm rotary cannon thatisthe airplane's primary armament and the heaviest suchautomaticcannon mounted on an aircraft. The A-10's airframe wasdesigned forsurvivability, with measures such as 1,200 pounds (540kg) oftitanium armor for protection of the cockpit and aircraftsystemsthat enables the aircraft to continue flying aftertakingsignificant damage. The A-10A single-seat variant was theonlyversion built, though one A-10A was converted to theA-10Btwin-seat version. In 2005, a program was begun to upgradeA-10Aaircraft to the A-10C configuration. The A-10's official namecomesfrom the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt of World War II, a fighterthatwas particularly effective at close air support. The A-10 ismorecommonly known by its nicknames "Warthog" or "Hog". It also hasasecondary mission, where it provides airborne forward aircontrol,directing other aircraft in attacks on ground targets.Aircraftused primarily in this role are designated OA-10. With avariety ofupgrades and wing replacements, the A-10's service lifemay beextended to 2028. Criticism that the U.S. Air Force did nottakeclose air support (CAS) seriously prompted a few servicemembers toseek a specialized attack aircraft. In the Vietnam War,largenumbers of ground-attack aircraft were shot down by smallarms,surface-to-air missiles, and low-level anti-aircraftgunfire,prompting the development of an aircraft better able tosurvivesuch weapons.
