Abdullah ibn Abi Quhaafah, was a senior companion (Sahabi)andthefather-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. He ruledovertheRashidun Caliphate from 632 to 634 CE, when he becamethefirstMuslim Caliph following Muhammad's death. As caliph,AbuBakrsucceeded to the political and administrativefunctionspreviouslyexercised by Muhammad. He was also commonlyknown as TheTruthful(Arabic: الصديق‎ Al-Siddiq). As a young man,Abu Bakrbecame amerchant and he travelled extensively in Arabiaandneighboringlands in the Middle East, through which he gainedbothwealth andexperience. He eventually came to be recognized asthechief of hisclan. On his return from a business trip to Yemen,hewas informedthat in his absence Muhammad had openly declaredhisprophethood.Not long after, Abu Bakr accepted Islam and wasthefirst personoutside the family of Muhammad to openly becomeaMuslim. He wasinstrumental in the conversion of many people totheIslamic faithand early in 623, Abu Bakr's daughter Aishawasmarried toMuhammad, strengthening the ties between the two men.AbuBakrserved as a trusted advisor and was the father-in-lawtoMuhammad.During the lifetime of Muhammad, he was involvedinseveralcampaigns such as the Battle of Uhud, the Battle oftheTrench, theInvasion of Banu Qurayza, Battle of Khaybar,theConquest of Mecca,the Battle of Hunayn, the Siege of Ta'if andtheBattle of Tabuk,where he was reported to have given all ofhiswealth for thepreparation of this expedition. AbuBakr's Caliphate lasted for a littleover two years(or 27 months),ending with his death after anillness. Though theperiod of hiscaliphate was not long, it includedsuccessfulinvasions of the twomost powerful empires of the time, aremarkableachievement in itsown right.
