The Hebrew Bible (Jewish Bible)The Hebrew Bible (also Hebrew Scriptures, Jewish Bible(JudaicaBible); Latin: Biblia Hebraica) is a term used by biblicalscholarsto refer to the Tanakh (Hebrew: תנ"ך‎), the canonicalcollection ofJewish texts, which is the common textual source ofthe severalcanonical editions of the Christian Old Testament. Thesetexts arecomposed mainly in Biblical Hebrew, with some passages inBiblicalAramaic (in the books of Daniel, Ezra and a fewothers). The term Hebrew Bible is an attempt to provide specificitywithrespect to contents, while avoiding allusion to anyparticularinterpretative tradition or theological school ofthought. It iswidely used in academic writing and interfaithdiscussion inrelatively neutral contexts meant to include dialogueamong allreligious traditions, but not widely in the innerdiscourse of thereligions which use its text.Hebrew Bible is a term that refers to the Tanakh (Jewishcanon)in relation to the many Christian biblical canons. In itsLatinform, Biblia Hebraica, it traditionally serves as a titleforprinted editions of the Masoretic Text. Many biblical studies scholars advocate use of the term"HebrewBible" (or "Hebrew Scriptures") when discussing these booksinacademic writing, as a neutral substitute to terms withreligiousconnotations (e.g., the non-neutral term "Old Testament").TheSociety of Biblical Literature's Handbook of Style, which isthestandard for major academic journals like the HarvardTheologicalReview and conservative Protestant journals like theBibliothecaSacra and the Westminster Theological Journal, suggeststhatauthors "be aware of the connotations of alternativeexpressionssuch as... Hebrew Bible [and] Old Testament" withoutprescribingthe use of either.

Latin Vulgate 1.0

Biblia Sacra Vulgata LatinaThe Vulgate is a late 4th-century Latin translation of theBible. It was largely the work of St. Jerome, who was commissionedby PopeDamasus I in 382 to make a revision of the Vetus Latina(old Latintranslations). Its widespread adoption eventually led totheireclipse. By the 13th century this revision had come to becalled theversio vulgata, that is, the "commonly usedtranslation". In the16th century it became the definitive andofficially promulgatedLatin version of the Bible in the RomanCatholic Church. Before the publication of Pius XII's Divino Afflante Spiritu, theVulgate was the source text used for many translations of theBibleinto vernacular languages. In English, the interlineartranslationof the Lindisfarne Gospels as well as other Old EnglishBibletranslations, the translation of John Wycliffe, theDouay-RheimsBible, the Confraternity Bible, and Ronald Knox'stranslation wereall made from the Vulgate. The Vulgate has a compound text that is not entirely the workofJerome.[2] Its components include:- Jerome's independent translation from the Hebrew: the books oftheHebrew Bible, usually not including his translation of thePsalms. This was completed in 405.- Translation from the Greek of Theodotion by Jerome: Thethreeadditions to the Book of Daniel; Song of the Three Children,Storyof Susanna, and The Idol Bel and the Dragon. The Song of theThreeChildren was retained within the narrative of Daniel, theother twoadditions Jerome moved to the end of the book.- Translation from the Septuagint by Jerome: the Rest ofEsther.Jerome gathered all these additions together at the end ofthe bookof Esther.- Translation from the Hexaplar Septuagint by Jerome: hisGallicanversion of the Book of Psalms. Jerome's Hexaplaricrevisions ofother books of Old Testament continued to circulate inItaly forseveral centuries, but only Job and fragments of otherbookssurvive.- Free translation by Jerome from a secondary Aramaicversion:Tobias and Judith.- Revision by Jerome of the Old Latin, corrected with referencetothe oldest Greek manuscripts available: the Gospels.- Old Latin, more or less revised by a person or personsunknown:Baruch, Letter of Jeremiah, 3 Esdras,[3] Acts, Epistles, and theApocalypse.- Old Latin, wholly unrevised: Epistle to the Laodiceans, PrayerofManasses, 4 Esdras, Wisdom, Ecclesiasticus, and 1 and2Maccabees.Jerome did not embark on the work with the intention ofcreatinga new version of the whole Bible, but the changing natureof hisprogram can be tracked in his voluminous correspondence. Hehadbeen commissioned by Damasus I in 382 to revise the Old Latintextof the four Gospels from the best Greek texts, and by the timeofDamasus' death in 384 he had thoroughly completed thistask, together with a more cursory revision from the GreekSeptuagint ofthe Old Latin text of the Psalms in the Roman Psalterwhich is nowlost. How much of the rest of the New Testament he thenrevised isdifficult to judge today, but little of his work survivedin theVulgate text. The Vulgate is usually credited as being the first translationofthe Old Testament into Latin directly from the Hebrew Tanakh, ratherthan the Greek Septuagint. Jerome's extensive use ofexegeticalmaterial written in Greek, on the other hand, as well ashis use ofthe Aquiline and Theodotiontic columns of the Hexapla, along withthe somewhat paraphrastic style in which he translatedmakes itdifficult to determine exactly how direct the conversionof Hebrewto Latin was.
