It isanexciting time for young drivers but it can also be a time fulloftrepidation and uncertainly since the process to obtainthatunrestricted freedom is arduous and complex.This mobile app called Log ‘N Learn offers an innovativesolutionto the issue of unsafe driving among young drivers.Research showsthat young drivers between the ages of 16 and 24make up adisproportionate number of the traffic and accidentproblems on theroad. So, several states have adopted the GraduatedLicensingProgram, or GLP, to ensure that drivers have adequatedriver’seducation as well as sufficient driving practice beforeobtaining afull, unrestricted license. However the GLP is a veryconfusingprocess that has lots of different complex requirements.This appseeks to simplify this process and offer some additionalfeatures tomake young drivers into more educated and safetyconsciousdrivers.The Key Features of Log ‘N Learn are:I. “Get My License” Personalized Process GuideThe driver education program in Kentucky is called theGraduatedLicensing Program (GLP). In order to obtain a fulllicense, youngdrivers must meet different requirements for thepermit andrestricted licensing stages. Students and parents told usthatthese regulations were complicated and that they often didn’tknowwhat to study, where to go for exams, what kinds ofidentificationto bring, and what the specific driving rules werefor each stage.To fix this, we developed a personal GLP ProcessChecklist andGuide that tracks a student’s progress over time andreminds them,at each stage, of important deadlines, studyrequirements, anddriving rules.II. Digital Practice Driving Log & Skill ChecklistIn the permit phase of the GLP, students must complete 60hoursof supervised practice driving, ten of which needs to beafterdark. The practice hours must be recorded on a log sheetandsubmitted to an examiner before the road test. Sadly, wediscoveredthat many applicants lose their paper sheets and end upfabricatingthe hours and signatures required on the log. Toovercome theseissues, this app will log times, conditions andpractice milesduring each session. A parental/guardian code will berequired toauthenticate that that driver actually drove thosehours.Additionally the app will turn off calls and texts to thephonewhen the app is on.III. Education & The Science of Safe DrivingThe Log ‘N Learn app will improve driver education inseveralways. We will link to the official Drivers Manual and createstudyguides. We will also include tests and quizzes. Finally, wewilluse pictures of road signs and hazards like “Bridge IcesBeforeRoad,” or “No High Beams in Fog” to provide education in theappabout the science behind safe driving. If students learnthescience behind a rule or warning, they will be more likelytounderstand it and remember what to do when the time comes.
