Alice's Adventures in Wonderland(commonlyshortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel writtenbyEnglish mathematician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under thepseudonymLewis Carroll. It tells of a girl named Alice fallingthrough arabbit hole into a fantasy world populated bypeculiar,anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays with logic,giving thestory lasting popularity with adults as well as withchildren. Itis considered to be one of the best examples of theliterarynonsense genre. Its narrative course and structure,characters andimagery have been enormously influential in bothpopular cultureand literature, especially in the fantasygenre.

Alice was published in 1865, three years after CharlesLutwidgeDodgson and the Reverend Robinson Duckworth rowed a boat uptheIsis on 4 July 1862 (this popular date of the "goldenafternoon"might be a confusion or even another Alice-tale, forthatparticular day was cool, cloudy, and rainy) with the threeyoungdaughters of Henry Liddell (the Vice-Chancellor ofOxfordUniversity and Dean of Christ Church): Lorina CharlotteLiddell(aged 13, born 1849, "Prima" in the book's prefatory verse);AlicePleasance Liddell (aged 10, born 1852, "Secunda" in theprefatoryverse); Edith Mary Liddell (aged 8, born 1853, "Tertia" intheprefatory verse).

The journey began at Folly Bridge in Oxford and ended 3 miles (5km)north-west in the village of Godstow. During the trip, Dodgsontoldthe girls a story that featured a bored little girl namedAlice whogoes looking for an adventure. The girls loved it, andAlice Liddellasked Dodgson to write it down for her. He beganwriting themanuscript of the story the next day, although thatearliest versionno longer exists.
