가톨릭이 이땅에 들어온지 200년이 넘었습니다.
가톨릭 2000년의 긴 역사에 비한다면 짧은 시일이나, 그동안 끊이지 않았던 모진 박해는 그야말로 무자비한것이었고.박해자 수는 줄잡아도 10.000명에 이르나 그중 교회법의 엄격한 심사를 거쳐 영광의 성인위에 오른이가103위성인입니다. 한국 역사상 가장 참혹한 박해는 1801년의 신유박해, 1939년의 기해박해, 1846년의병오박해,1866년의 병인박해 등을 들 수 있는데 그 가운데 병인박해는 그 규모나 가혹성으로나 가장 처참한 것입니다.

실로 한국 천주교회 전반기 1세기는 박해의 역사였고 순교의 역사였습니다.
그러나 그것은 한국 천주교회 발전의 밑거름이 되었고, 이 땅에 새로운 역사의 장을 마련하는 토대가 되었습니다.

이곳은 정조왕 이후 국내에 자생하던 한국 초대 천주교신자들이 박해를 받으며 수많은 천주교신자들이 가혹한 고통과죽음을통해 신앙을 증거했던 당시의 처참한 순교의 자리, 특히 화성을 중심으로 이루어진 박해의 역사속에 현재수원성지주위는 모두가순교의 역사를 가지고 있습니다.

현재의 수원성지 (북수동성당)은 1923년 11월 23일 설립되었고 현재의 성당은 1979년 4월 5일 김남수안젤로주교의 집전으로 축성되었습니다.

본당 성전에는 성 김대건 신부님의 척추 뼈, 성 최경환 성인 오른쪽 다리뼈 외 1, 성 김대건 신부님 발뼈 외3.이모셔저 있습니다.

2000년 9월 20일 김남수 주교는 북수동 성당을 순교성지로 선포하였다.
