Wingsuit flying (or wingsuiting) is the sport offlyingthrough the air using a wingsuit, which adds surface area tothehuman body to enable a significant increase in lift. Themodernwingsuit, first developed in the late 1990s, creates asurface areawith fabric between the legs and under the arms.Wingsuits aresometimes referred to as "birdman suits" (after themakers of thefirst commercially available wingsuit), "flyingsquirrel suits" (dueto their resemblance to the animal), and"bat suits" (due totheir vague resemblance tothe animal or perhapsthesuperhero).

A wingsuit flight normally ends by deploying a parachute, andsoa wingsuit can be safely flown from any point thatprovidessufficient altitude for flight and parachutedeployment—normallya skydiving drop aircraft,or BASE-jump exitpoint. The wingsuit flierwearsparachute equipment speciallydesigned for skydiving orBASE jumping. While the parachute flightis normal, the canopy pilottypically unzips arm wings (afterdeployment) to be able to reachthe steering parachute toggles andcontrol the descent path.

History

An early attempt at wingsuit flying was made on 4 February1912by a 33-year-old tailor,Franz Reichelt, who jumped from theEiffelTower to test his invention of a combination of parachute andwing, which was similar to modern wingsuits. He misled the guardsbysaying that the experiment was going to be conducted with adummy. He hesitated quite a long time before he jumped, and hit thegroundhead first, opening a measurable hole in the frozen ground, but anautopsy showed that he died of a heart attack before hittingthepavement. A film of his attempt exists.

A wingsuit was first used in 1930 by a 19-year-old American,RexFinney, of Los Angeles, California, as an attempt toincreasehorizontal movement and maneuverability during aparachutejump.[1][2] These early wingsuits were made ofmaterials suchas canvas, wood, silk, steel, and whalebone. Theywere not veryreliable, although some "birdmen",notably ClemSohn and Leo Valentin, claimed to haveglided formiles.

In the mid-1990s, the modern wingsuit wasdevelopedby Patrick de Gayardon of France, adapted fromthe modelused by John Carta. In 1997, the Bulgarian SammyPopovdesigned and built a wingsuit which had a larger wing betweenthelegs and longer wings on the arms. His prototype wasdevelopedat Boulder City, Nevada. Testing was conductedina vertical wind tunnel inLas Vegas at FlyawayLasVegas. Popov's wingsuit first flew in October 1998over Jean,Nevada, but it never went into commercialproduction. Popov'sdesign was a great improvement in creating lift;it was able toslow the vertical speed to 30 km/h while glidinghorizontallyat speeds over 300 km/h. In 1998, Chuck "Da Kine"Raggs builta version which incorporated hard ribs insidethewing airfoils. Although these more rigid wings werebetterable to keep their shape in flight, this made the wingsuitheavierand more difficult to fly. Raggs' design also never wentintocommercial production. Flying together for the first time,Popovand Raggs showcased their designs side-by-side at theWorldFree-fall Convention at Quincy, Illinois, in August 1999.Bothdesigns performed well. At the same event,multiple-formationwingsuit skydives were made which included deGayardon's, Popov's,and Raggs' suits.

It is thelargest extant member of its family, with malesaveraging43–45 kg (95–99 lb), and females36–38.5 kg(79–85 lb). Like the red wolf, it isdistinguishedfrom other Canisspecies by its larger size andless pointedfeatures, particularly on the ears and muzzle. Itswinter furis long and bushy, and predominantly a mottled gray incolor, although nearly pure white, red, or brown to black alsooccur. Asof 2005, 37subspecies of C.lupus arerecognised byMSW3. The nominatesubspecies is theEurasianwolf (Canis lupus lupus), alsoknown as the common wolf. The gray wolf is the second most specialisedmemberofthe genus Canis, after theEthiopian wolf, asdemonstratedby itsmorphological adaptations to hunting largeprey, itsmore gregarious nature, and its highly advancedexpressivebehavior. It is nonetheless closely related enoughtosmaller Canis species, such asthe easternwolf, coyote and goldenjackal to producefertile hybrids. Its closest relative isthe domesticdog, with which it shared acommon Europeanancestor whichlikely diverged 14,900 years ago. It is theonly speciesof Canis to have a range encompassingboththe Old and New Worlds, and originated inEurasiaduring thePleistocene, colonizing North America on at leastthreeseparate occasions during theRancholabrean. Itisa social animal, travellingin nuclearfamilies consisting of amated pair, accompaniedby the pair'sadult offspring. The gray wolf is typicallyanapexpredator throughout its range, withonlyhumans and tigers posing a serious threat to it.Itfeeds primarily on largeungulates, though it also eatssmalleranimals, livestock, carrion, and garbage. The gray wolf is one of the world's best known andwellresearched animals, with probably more books written about itthanany other wildlife species. It has a long historyofassociation with humans, having been despised and huntedinmost pastoralcommunities due to its attacks onlivestock, while conversely being respectedinsomeagrarian and hunter-gatherer societies.Althoughthe fear of wolves is pervasive in many human societies, themajority of recorded attacks on people have been attributedtoanimals suffering from rabies. Non-rabid wolves haveattackedand killed people, mainly children, but this is unusual, aswolvesare relatively few, live away from people, and have beentaught tofear humans by hunters and shepherds.[

Together with the fur seals, they comprisethe family Otariidae, eared seals, whichcontainssix extant and one extinct species (theJapanesesea lion)in five genera. Their range extendsfromthe subarctic to tropical watersofthe global ocean inboththe Northern andSouthern Hemispheres, with thenotableexception of the northern Atlantic Ocean.[1]They haveanaverage lifespan of 20–30 years. A male California sea lionweighson average about 300 kg (660 lb) and is about8 ft(2.4 m) long, while the female sea lion weighs100 kg(220 lb) and is 6 ft (1.8 m) long. Thelargest sealion is Steller's sea lion, which can weigh1,000 kg(2,200 lb) and grow to a length of 10 ft(3.0 m).Sea lions consume large quantities of food at a timeand are knownto eat about 5–8% of their body weight (about15–35 lb(6.8–15.9 kg)) at a single feedingPinnipeds (/ˈpɪnəˌpɛdz/),(from Latin pinnafinand pes,pedis foot[2]) commonly knownasseals,[a] are awidely distributed anddiverseclade offin-footed, semiaquatic marinemammals. Thereare 33extant species of pinnipeds, and more than 50 extinct specieshavebeen described from fossils. While seals were historicallythoughtto have descended from twoancestrallines, molecular evidence supports themasa monophyletic lineage (descended from oneancestralline). Pinnipeds belong to theorder Carnivora and theirclosest livingrelativesare bears andmusteloids (weasels, raccoons and skunks),havingdiverged about 50 million years ago.Seals range in size from the 1 m (3 ft 3 in)and45 kg (99 lb) Baikal seal to the5 m(16 ft) and 3,200 kg(7,100 lb) southernelephant seal, which is also thelargest carnivoran.[b]Severalspecies exhibit sexualdimorphism. They have streamlinedbodies and four limbs that aremodified into flippers. Thoughnot as fast in the wateras dolphins, seals are more flexibleand agile. Otariids usetheir front limbs primarily to propelthemselves through the water, while phocids and walruses use theirhind limbs. Otariids andwalruses have hind limbs that can bepulled under the body and usedas legs on land. By comparison, terrestrial locomotion by phocids ismore cumbersome. Otariids havevisible external ears, while phocidsand walruses lack these.Pinnipeds have well-developed senses—theireyesight and hearing areadapted for both air and water, and theyhave anadvanced tactile system intheir whiskers orvibrissae. Some species are well adaptedfor diving to greatdepths. They have a layer of fat,or blubber, under the skinto keep warm in the cold water, and, other than the walrus, allspecies are covered in fur.
