The Zones of Regulation (www.zonesofregulation.com) isaframework for thinking as well as a curriculum gearedtowardhelping students gain skills in consciously regulatingtheirbehaviors, including the management of their emotions andlevel ofalertness. This, in turn, leads to increased self-controlandproblem solving abilities.

Leah Kuypers is the author of the book, The Zones ofRegulation(2011, Social Thinking Publishing). The Zones ofRegulation wasfeatured as a promising practice in AttentionMagazine and is beingimplemented school wide in districts acrossthe United States andCanada.

The Zones of Regulation assists students in conceptualizinghowthey are feeling by creating a system to categorize theiremotionsand levels of alertness into one of four zones. Using acognitivebehavior approach, the App's learning activities aredesigned tohelp students recognize when they are in differentzones, with eachof the four zones represented by a differentcolor.

The Zones is designed to be used with elementarystudents,secondary students, and adults. The Zones has beendeveloped toassist student's with behavioral issues, ADHD, autism,and anxiety,among other social disorders.

Throughout the App, students learn how to use strategies ortoolsto manage their feelings and behaviors in each zone. Giveneachstudent's needs and preferences are unique, students explorevariouscalming techniques, cognitive strategies, and sensorysupports,building a toolbox of methods to use to regulate and movebetweenzones.

However, self-regulation takes a lot more than knowingabouttools. To deepen students' understanding of how toself-regulate,the App also explores how triggers or differentevents can impacthow they are feeling.

The App highlights how to read others' facial expressionsandrecognize a broader range of emotions and perspectives abouthowothers see and react to their behavior, insight into eventsthattrigger their different zones, and when and how to use toolsandproblem solving skills to change the way they are thinkingandfeeling.

The App provides a fun, and engaging experience whilelearningand gaining valuable knowledge to assist in developingreal-lifeskills. Students will be taken on an adventure throughouta townfilled with excitement, rewards, and mini games.

To enhance learning, it is recommended that an adultcloselymonitor the student's progression through the App, askingprobingquestions and facilitating discussions about how the App'scontentcan be generalized to the student's real life.
