Moby-Dick is widelyconsidered to be a Great American Novel and a treasure of worldliterature. The story tells the adventures of the wandering sailorIshmael, and his voyage on the whaleship Pequod, commanded byCaptain Ahab. Ishmael soon learns that Ahab seeks one specificwhale: Moby Dick, a ferocious, enigmatic white sperm whale. In aprevious encounter, the whale destroyed Ahab's boat and bit off hisleg. Ahab intends to take revenge. In Moby-Dick, Melville employs stylized language, symbolism, andmetaphor to explore numerous complex themes. Through the maincharacter's journey, the concepts of class and social status, goodand evil, and the existence of gods are all examined as Ishmaelspeculates upon his personal beliefs and his place in the universe. The narrator's reflections, along with his descriptions of asailor's life aboard a whaling ship, are woven into the narrativealong with Shakespearean literary devices such as stage directions, extended soliloquies, and asides. The book portrays insecurity thatis still seen today when it comes to non-human beings along withthe belief that these beings understand and act like humans. Thestory is based on the actual events around the whaleship Essex, which was attacked by a sperm whale while at sea and sank.Moby-Dick has been classified as American Romanticism. It wasfirst published by Richard Bentley in London on October 18, 1851,in an expurgated three-volume edition titled The Whale, and weekslater as a single volume, by New York City publisher Harper andBrothers as Moby-Dick; or, The Whale on November 14, 1851. Althoughthe book initially received mixed reviews, Moby-Dick is nowconsidered part of the Western canon.

Just download and start readingright away.Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is a novel written byMary Shelley. Shelley started writing the story when she waseighteen, and the novel was published when she was twenty-one. Thefirst edition was published anonymously in London in 1818.Shelley's name appears on the second edition, published in France. It is common to refer to the monster itself as "Frankenstein", butin the novel the monster is identified via words such as "monster","fiend", "wretch", "vile insect", "daemon", and "it"; Shelleyherself called it "Adam".Through research it can be determined the many influences theauthor was under during the creation of the novel. She had traveledthe region in which the story takes place, and the topics ofgalvanism and such other occult ideas were themes of conversationamong her companions. The actual storyline took place from a dream.Mary Shelley was talking with her three other writers and theydecided they would have a competition to see who could write thebest horror story. After thinking for weeks about what her possiblestoryline could be Shelley dreamed about a scientist who createdlife and was horrified by what he created. Then "Frankenstein" waswritten. Frankenstein is infused with some elements of the Gothicnovel and the Romantic movement and is also considered to be one ofthe earliest examples of science fiction. It was also a warningagainst the expansion of modern man in the Industrial Revolution, alluded to in the novel's subtitle, The Modern Prometheus. Thestory has had an influence across literature and popular cultureand spawned a complete genre of horror stories and films. The novelis also partially based on Giovanni Aldini's electrical experimentson dead and (sometimes) living animals.
