Biodiversity at theCastello Sforzesco in Milan - Guide to florulaGabriele Galasso, Enrico Banfi, Chiara Calabrese, StefanoMartellos, Pier Luigi Nimis-Photo by Andrea Moro, Giorgio Bardelli, Guido Brusa, GiorgioCeffali, Gabriele Galasso, Rodolfo Gentili, Janos Grapow, DanielaLongo, Giuseppe Sardi et al.In the heart of a metropolis, the Castello Sforzesco in Milanmaterializes the charm of a past that for more than five centurieshas been inhabited splendor, intrigue and sublime expressions ofart. The walls, now become the window of peace for the citizens, are embellished with a few know-it-a natural treasure, a publiccredit of which must be taken conscience, especially in relation tothe much desired sustainability of metropolitan living here wasfulfilled precisely in 'encounter between two stories: that of manand that of nature. The wall system, designed for defensive purposes, it became home toa vegetation wall represented by numerous and valuable species ofwild plants, which persist today provides a 'lung' of biodiversitysmall, but high-profile: major plants have been able to preservethanks to the unique characteristics of the product, sharing theirstory.A recent study coordinated by the Botanical Section of the NaturalHistory Museum of Milan on the area within the outer walls of thecastle and the immediate surroundings (including walls, gardens, flower beds, ditches, alleys, ruins external) has revealed 133species of more than 50 families, including grasses, shrubs andeven trees in a nutshell. If, on the one hand, there are invasiveplants and harmful to keep under control, the other will hide small'jewels' of great conservation value, witnesses of a lostenvironmental quality and of a lost relationship between man andnature. Among these, Hieracium Southern subsp. Southern endemicspecies, ie, exclusive of the city of Milan, which was previouslythought to be extinct. In urban areas increasingly degraded, archaeological sites andmonuments are small but essential reservoirs of biodiversity andthe Castello Sforzesco is one good example, attractive not only fortourists, but also for the Milanese, which can discover here anatural dimension of Milan often forgotten. The Castle was built as a defensive fortress between 1358 and 1368by Galeazzo II Visconti. His descendants, Gian Galeazzo and FilippoMaria, transformed the structure in the family residence setting upthe park. In 1450, Francesco Sforza began reconstruction of thecastle, previously dismantled to restore the walls of the city werebuilt in the entrance tower (designed by Filarete) and roundtowers. Later, the castle underwent several modifications. Afterthe Unification of Italy (1861) was bought by the city of Milan, who started a phase of restoration and reconstruction directed byLuca Beltrami. Damaged by bombing in 1943 and again restored, thecastle is today a square plan and four corner towers and issurrounded by a large moat without water today. It seems incrediblethat the culmination of a centuries-long history, which was fatalto the survival of many plants have now disappeared in Lombardy, has reserved right in the Sforzesco Castle, in the heart of thecity of Milan, the role of conservation of biodiversity as a smallbut significant and unexpected.

Trieste 1914-18 1.7 APK
Fabio ToderoThe city of Trieste was immediately involved with his territoryin the tragedy of the Great War, which broke out in the hot summerof 1914.The city had been able to witness a macabre background to theconflict when, on the evening of July 1, in the Gulf of Julian citycame the squadron escorting the bodies of Franz Ferdinand, heir tothe throne of Austria-Hungary and his wife Sofia, murdered inSarajevo on June 28th. The next day, early in the morning, in aclimate of general mourning, a funeral procession accompanied thecoffins of illustrious victims through the city to reach thestation of the Southern Railway; hence would continue their journeyto Vienna, where the funeral would be held officers, and then toArstetten, their final resting place. It was then the turn of the general mobilization, he saw the men ofTrieste and its territory on their way to the far Galician frontand the Balkans, and from the first days of the war were felt theeconomic and social consequences of the conflict, aggravated entryinto the war, in May 1915.The approach of the operations led to a wider militarization of theterritory -the port of Trieste had been mined in the summer of '14- and also the Trieste Karst suffered the consequences: thecivilian population of the villages in the karst belt closer tofront had to flee their homes; were prepared defense works; ancientartifacts were transformed into artillery observers; sites onceused by small communities of prehistoric hunters were rediscoveredas makeshift hospitals. A large area of the Province of Triestewas transformed into a natural fortress like Mount Hermada, againstwhich it Italian troops were repeatedly and unnecessarily sent tothe assault. Other places such as San Giovanni di Duino, where theTimavo revises light finishing his course largely underground, werethe scene of bloody clashes. In addition, a substantial number of citizens of the Kingdom ofItaly left the city then still Austrian, while since the summer of1914 a number of young - and not so young - Trieste and fascinateddall'irredentismo Giuliani, had crossed the border to joinvoluntarily in the ranks of the Italian army, opening in severalfamilies painful lacerations. The territory of the Province of Trieste is home to numerousremains of those dramatic events: trenches, walkways, natural andartificial cavities, and many are also signs of the memory of theGreat War: monuments, cemeteries, headstones, museums, schools andrecreation centers dedicated to figures volunteers unredeemed. Atthe same time that memory excluded from collective memory thereality of the thousands and thousands of children of this land,Italian and Slovenian, who had served in the army or navy Habsburg, often do not return from the front or from the units on which theywere employed. The Regional Institute for the history of the liberation movementin Friuli Venezia Giulia, thanks to a generous contribution of theProvince of Trieste, on the centenary of the outbreak of the GreatWar, so he decided to propose some of the many possible pathslinked irredentism - understood as one of the factors that formedpart of the young people of this territory, causing them to thechoice of the volunteer in the ranks of the Italian army - and theFirst World War.
Piante Palustri Parco Apuane 1.0 APK
La guida è stata realizzata in collaborazione con il ProgettoDryades, coordinato dal Dipartimento di Scienze della Vitadell'Università di Trieste, nell’ambito del Progetto diconservazione e valorizzazione della biodiversità nelle aree umidedei tre parchi regionali della Toscana, finanziato dal Ministerodell’Ambiente (Progettualità CIPE 19/2004).Pier Luigi Nimis, AntonioBartelletti, Emanuele GuazziPhoto by Andrea MoroThe term 'wetlands' the Ramsar Convention states: 'swamps, bogs, marshes or other bodies of water natural or artificial, permanentand not, with fresh water, brackish or salt, or current stops'.These ecosystems are home to a specialized flora of greatecological or phytogeographical.Tuscany still several marsh areas although small, despite massiveremediation. In the Apuan Alps they are infrequent, due to the prevalence ofvery permeable limestone substrates that do not allow significantponding of water, there are also some examples of wetlands, whichtoday have become very delicate, preserving plants have becomerare, threatened or vunerabili. The Marshes of Fociomboli is the best known and most extensivewetland, occupying about an acre a shelf elliptical that was thebed of a basin Würmian well preserved in the typical forms, theflora is rich in species, including three rare orchids,Dactylorhiza incarnata , Epipactis palustris and the glacial relictHerminium monorchis, present in the Apennines in the station aloneFociomboli.Near Mount Tontorone, a small wetland is home to the only stationapuana of Menyanthes trifoliata, the small wetland Gorfigliano inGarfagnana hosts a large population of the rare Epipactispalustris; ricodate are also areas of Puntato and the mouth ofMosceta, in Retrocorchia, and two marsh areas now almost in itsresidual in M.
