Description

Chinese Poetry provides a window like nootherinto the Chinese language and its people. By working withtheinteractive learning tools in this mobile app, students gainanintimate and deeply satisfying familiarity with thesounds, characters, and meanings of a selection of literary gemschosen fortheir brevity and simplicity.

Poetry and painting are inseparable in China, so we begin withacalligrapher’s rendering of the selected poem that conveysitsvisual dynamism.

From here we turn to the Text Reader module, which introducesthesounds and meanings of each line of the poem. We can touchanycharacter to display its meaning and pronunciation. And wecanlisten repeatedly to each line of the poem to imprint its soundsonour memory.

The flashcards tool tests our recollection of the new wordsandcharacters we’ve just learned. If we stumble on a character, theapp displays a list of commonly used words incorporatingthatcharacter, to help cement it in our memory.

Once we’re able to recognize the characters in the poem,it’stime to learn to write them. The app uses stroke animationstodemonstrate the correct formation of each character, andtheninvites us to practice drawing it ourselves, providingimmediatestroke by stroke feedback along the way.

Translating poetry is a notoriously difficult task, so theappoffers three different English renderings of each poem to helpthestudent to grasp the range of meanings it suggests.

Now it’s time to put the pieces together and test our recallofthe poem as a whole. After reading it through one more time, wecanscramble the character tiles, and then attempt to restore themtotheir correct positions based on our memory of the soundsandcharacters of each line.

A brief biographical note, finally, provides a glimpse ofthepersonality behind the poem and the historical context in whichitwas written, while a Reading Notes page offers basic guidanceforunderstanding the form, genre, and major themes of the poem.
