ইতিহাস ভবিষ্যতের দর্পন আর আগামী দিনের সামনে চলার অনুপ্রেরণা। অতীতউপলব্ধি বর্তমানকে চেনার এবং ভবিষ্যৎ সমাজ বিনির্মাণের স্বপ্ন পূরণেরপথ দেখায়। দেশের দক্ষিণ-পশ্চিম বঙ্গের কেন্দ্রস্থলে অবস্থিত প্রাচীনএবং ঐতিহ্যবাহী সর্ববৃহৎ শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠান হিসেবে সরকারি হোসেন শহীদসোহরাওয়ার্দী কলেজ, মাগুরা ইতিহাসের অতীত উপলব্ধি এবং বর্তমান ওভবিষ্যৎ সমাজ বিনির্মাণের স্বপ্নসিঁড়ি। ইতিহাস থেকে জানা যায়, মাগুরারজনপদ ছিল কুসংস্কারাচ্ছন্ন ও অনগ্রসর এলাকা। আধুনিক শিক্ষা ও সভ্যতারছোঁয়া থেকে ছিল বঞ্চিত। মাগুরাবাসির অন্ধকারাচ্ছন্ন অন্তর আলোকিতকরার প্রত্যয় নিয়ে মাগুরার বুকে প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয় একটি বিদ্যানিকেতন যাআজকের পূর্ণাঙ্গ সরকারি হোসেন শহীদ সোহরাওয়ার্দী কলেজ, মাগুরা। ৩০দশকের কথা। এসময় মাগুরায় একটি হাই ইংলিশ স্কুল ছিল। কিন্তু এলাকাঅনগ্রসর থাকার কারণে মাগুরার অধিকাংশ মুসলমানই এই স্কুলটিকেবিধর্মীদের স্কুল মনে করত। ফলে তাঁদের ছেলে-মেয়ে এই বিদ্যালয়ে ভর্তিকরত না। আব্দুল গনি হাই মাদ্রাসাই ছিল (বর্তমানে মাগুরা এ. জি.একাডেমী) মাগুরার মুসলিম সম্প্রদায়ের একমাত্র পছন্দের বিদ্যালয়।কিন্তু হাই মাদ্রাসা থেকে পাস করে মুসলমান শিক্ষার্থীদের উচ্চ শিক্ষালাভ করার তেমন কোন সুযোগ ছিল না। এ সময়ে মাগুরাবাসীর উচ্চ শিক্ষারসুযোগ সহজতর করার উদ্দেশ্য ১৯৪০ সালে প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয় “মাগুরা ইসলামিকইন্টারমিডিয়েট কলেজ” এই কলেজের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা অধ্যক্ষ হন জনাব মৌলভী মোঃমোখলেছুর রহমান। কলেজ প্রতিষ্ঠার পর এর উন্নয়ন যাতে দ্রুত তরান্নিত হয়সেই উদ্দেশ্যে কলেজটির নামকরণ করা হয় অবিভক্ত বাংলার তদানিন্তন সিভিলসাপ্লাই (ফুড) মন্ত্রী জনাব হোসেন শহীদ সোহরাওয়ার্দীর নামে “ মাগুরাহোসেন শহীদ সোহরাওয়ার্দী ইসলামিক ইন্টারমিডিয়েট কলেজ। ১৯৪৭ সালে দেশবিভাগের পর ১৯৫২ সালে কলেজটিকে সাধারণ কলেজে রূপান্তর করে “ মাগুরাহোসেন শহীদ সোহরাওয়ার্দী কলেজ” নামকরণ করা হয়। ১৯৫৬ সালে কলেজটিতেবি.এ. শ্রেণি খোলা হয়। ১৯৬২ সালে আই.এস.সি ও আই.কম. শ্রেণি চালু হয়।১৯৬৪ সালে বি.কম. শ্রেণি খোলা হয়। এরপর ১৯৭১ সালে বি.এস.সি শ্রেণিচালু হয় এবং কলেজটি পূর্ণাঙ্গ ডিগ্রি কলেজের মর্যাদা লাভ করে। ১৯৭১-এস্বাধীনতা লাভের পর ১৯৭৯ সালে বাংলাদেশ সরকার কলেজটিকে জাতীয়করণ করে।যা আজকের “ সরকারি হোসেন শহীদ সোহরাওয়ার্দী কলেজ, মাগুরা”। ১৯৯৬ সালেকলেজটিতে ৫টি বিষয়ে (বাংলা, রাষ্ট্রবিজ্ঞান, ব্যবস্থাপনা,পদার্থবিজ্ঞান ও প্রাণিবিজ্ঞান) অনার্স কোর্স চালু হয়। এরপর ২০০৬ সালেবাকী ৯টি বিষয়ে (ইংরেজি, অর্থনীতি, দর্শন, ইসলামের ইতিহাস ও সংস্কৃতি,ইসলাম শিক্ষা, হিসাববিজ্ঞান, রসায়ন, গণিত ও উদ্ভিদবিজ্ঞান) অনার্সশ্রেণি খোলা হয়েছে। বর্তমানে কলেজটিতে মোট ১৪টি বিষয়ের সবগুলিতেইঅনার্স কোর্স চালু রয়েছে। ২০১৩ সালে কলেজটিতে ৩টি বিষয়ে (বাংলা,ইংরেজি ও দর্শন) এবং ২০১৪ সালে কলেজটিতে ৫টি বিষয়ে (রাষ্ট্রবিজ্ঞান,অর্থনীতি, হিসাববিজ্ঞান, ব্যবস্থাপনা ও গণিত) মাস্টার্স শেষ পর্বকোর্স চালু হয়।
