Description

Snakes and Ladders originated in India as part of a family of diceboard games, including pachisi (present-day Ludo). It was known asmoksha pAtam or vaikunthapaali or paramapada sopaanam. The gamemade its way to England and was sold as Snakes and Ladders, thenthe basic concept was introduced in the United States as Chutes andLadders. Each player starts with a token on the starting square(usually the "1" grid square in the bottom left corner, or simply,the imaginary space beside the "1" grid square) and takes turns toroll a single die to move the token by the number of squaresindicated by the die roll. Tokens follow a fixed route marked onthe gameboard which usually follows a boustrophedon (ox-plow) trackfrom the bottom to the top of the playing area, passing oncethrough every square. If, on completion of a move, a player's tokenlands on the lower-numbered end of a "ladder", the player moves histoken up to the ladder's higher-numbered square. If he lands on thehigher-numbered square of a "snake" (or chute), he must move histoken down to the snake's lower-numbered square. If a player rollsa 6, he may, after moving, immediately take another turn; otherwiseplay passes to the next player in turn. In Ashta Chamma game; the movement of tokensiscontrolled by throw of a dice. The tokens enter the board onlywhenthe dice result is 1. The tokens travel anti-clockwise inoutersquares, clockwise in inner squares, and finally land up inhomesquare. If a player's token lands on a square occupied byanopponent's token then the opponent's token is killed and theplayergets an extra turn to play. The killed token returns toitsstarting square and has to go round all over again. Howeverkillingis not possible while the token is in a safe or crossmarkedsquare. Player gets an extra turn to play when the diceresult is 1or 6. When a token reaches the outer square left of itsstartingsquare; it further moves up into the inner squares and nowmoves inclockwise direction. The game finishes when a player'stokenmanages to get into the home square.
