Bangladesh was open for editing on September 28,2008.Mapping Bangladesh community was co-founded by GoogleandAltaf-Uz-Zaman on 17 January 2012. Afterwards, it startedworkingwith a view to uniting all mappers (citizen cartographers)acrossthe country under one community. The community aimed atteachingcitizen cartographers how to map features on Map Maker,provided aground for discussion about local conventions and engagedindiscussions about how to best represent the country digitallytothe world by means of Google Maps.Many of the Internet users in Bangladesh do not have masteryofEnglish, as such many of the local mappers could not follow theMapMaker Help[2] section in English given by GMM. Being the firsteverMap Maker based community in Bangladesh, Mapping Bangladeshcreateda site composed fully in local language (Bengali) withillustratedtutorials, pictorials and videos for mappers tounderstand betterhow Map Maker works and how to use this onlinetool. Creation ofthe local Map Maker based tutorial site led tosome serious mappingactivity across the country increasing thenumber of members of thecommunity from just a few to a severalhundred as of 2013. MappingBangladesh community is praised andclaimed to be one of the mostorganized mapping communities acrossMap Maker by othercountry-based Google Map Maker Communities.VisionTo develop the most detailed digital map of Bangladesh onGoogleMaps with as much accuracy as possible gathering localknowledge ofeveryone from across the country under onecommunity.Type of activityMapping Bangladesh focuses on digital mapping using the onlinebasedmapping tool by Google Inc. called Google Map Maker. Usersrequire acomputer, broadband internet, spare time and knowledge oftheirrespective neighborhood to be able to contribute to GoogleMaps ofBangladesh. They can add or edit features on Map Maker aswell asreview features edited by others using only theirlocalknowledge.Improving Bangladesh mapsMapping Bangladesh, by a collaborative effort, added allgovernmenthealthcare facilities across the country in all 485Sub-Districts(locally: Upazila). They have also demarcated all 64Districts and485 Sub-Districts, hence completing the entireDistrict andSub-District layer of Google Maps on Map Maker with thehelp ofLGED (Local Government Engineering Department) Maps.
