Translation for Translators 3.5
Existing English translations are notintendedto be used as a source text by those who would betranslating itinto other languages. It is our hope that ATranslation forTranslators will provide information that atranslator needs butwhich is not included in standardversions. Its distinguishing features are:• Short sentences• Clear connections between clauses and sentences• Sometimes clause order is reversed to reflect more clearlythechronological or logical order• All abstract nouns are made into full clauses• Most passive constructions have an active form and a passiveformsupplied• Most rhetorical questions have both a question form andanon-question form supplied• All figures of speech that we have been able to identifyarestated non-figuratively• Simple vocabulary is used wherever possible• Words are always used in their primary senseThe implicit information that is deemed necessary to understandwhatthe original writer intended to convey is supplied in italics.Userscan identify it easily and decide after checking whether itisneeded in that receptor language. Most national translators who use this translation as themajorsource text will need to be trained how to use it. They willneedto learn to evaluate the adjustments in this translationtodetermine what is the most appropriate adjustment for theirownlanguage. This translation is based on the scholarship of the SemanticandStructural Analyses and other published helps for translators, suchas Exegetical Summaries, as well as the English versionsandcommentaries. It is not anticipated that a translator woulduseonly this translation. Translators should use other translationsassources alongside this one.Advantages to using this translation:• The implicit information, written in italics, is easilyseen.Translators could choose to use it, modify it, or reject itasunnecessary.• In this day and age we have available a tremendous amountofresearch as to the meaning that the original writers expectedtoconvey to their audiences. Most of this research is notreadilyavailable to national translators. This translation utilizesthatresearch and it provides the first step intranslation—analyzingthe meaning. Please note that there is no implied endorsement of thistranslationby the Translation Department, either of the SummerInstitute ofLinguistics or of the Wycliffe Bible Translators or ofany otherpublisher.
