It is a verse from a suktaofthe Rigveda (Mandala 3.62.10). Gāyatrī is the name of theVedicmeter in which the verse is composed.[1] As the verse canbeinterpreted to invoke Savitr, it is also called theSāvitrīmantra.[2] Its recitation is traditionally preceded by oṃand theformula bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ, known as the mahāvyāhṛti"great(mystical) utterance".The main mantra appears in the hymn RV 3.62.10. Duringitsrecitation, the hymn is preceded by oṃ (ॐ) and the formulabhūrbhuvaḥ svaḥ (भूर् भुवः स्वः). This prefixing of the mantraproperis described in the Taittiriya Aranyaka (2.11.1-8), whichstatesthat it should be chanted with the syllable oṃ, followed bythethree Vyahrtis and the Gayatri verse. Whereas in principlethegāyatrī mantra specifies three pādas of eight syllables each,thetext of the verse as preserved in the Samhita is one short,seveninstead of eight.
