BrailleOne 1.1
Aim: The mobile application we createdenablesusers to type text on a touch screen using Braille code. Itservesa dual purpose: firstly, it is an accessible tool for sendingsmsmessages and emails and secondly, it is a means for efficientandenjoyable Braille learning and practice. We anticipatethatBrailleOne could help blind and visually-impaired peoplebenefitfrom the long-term effects of Braille literacy.Method: In BrailleOne, the screen is divided in threeverticalsectors and is used as a one-hand keyboard. These threesectorsrepresent Braille dots 1, 2 and 3 at first touch, andsecondly, dots 4, 5 and 6. First column dots (i.e. 1, 2 and 3) aretypedfirst and appear in blue. The remaining three dots (i.e. 4, 5and6) follow and appear in red. Apart from Braille typing, thefollowing functions are also available: Swipe up=Copy toclipboard,Swipe down=Repeat, Swipe left=Delete, Swiperight=Space. For example, to write “m” (Braille dots 1, 3 and 4), a usermustfirst touch sectors 1 and 3 and then touch sector1 again. Tolistento the message you have typed, touch the upper part ofthescreen. The application "BrailleOne" won the 1st IMCLStudentInternational Competition for Mobile Learning Apps, held on19 -20November 2015, in Thessaloniki, GreecePaul D.
