Surat ar-Rahman (Arabic: سورة الرحمن), oral-Rahman,is the 55th sura of the Qur'an with 78 ayats. It has therefrain:"Then which of your Lord's blessings would you deny?" Oneof themain aims of the sura is to chastise men and jinn for theirlack ofgratitude towards Allah, who has showered them with anabundance ofblessings. Verses 1-30 describe some of the resources(fruits, palmtrees, husked grain, fragrant plants, fresh and saltwater, pearls,ships) that Allah has graciously provided for the menand jinn hecreated, in his infinite mercy, out of clay andsmokeless fire(55:14), and set down under a sky illuminated by thetwin risingsof the sun and moon (55:17). In addition to thesematerialblessings, verses 1-4 recount the fact that Allah taughtman how tocommunicate and even gave him the Qur'an to guide him onthe pathto righteousness. The refrain, “Which, then, of yourLord’sblessings do you both deny?”, chastises thebountifully-providedfor men and jinn for failing to acknowledgetheir indebtedness toAllah for his tremendous mercy. The punishmentthat awaits theseungrateful creatures is briefly described inverses 35-45; for theremainder of the sura, the delights of thegardens of paradise(replete with shading branches, flowing springs,fruit, maidens,couches, cushions, and fine carpets) are lyricallydescribed,punctuated throughout by the stinging refrain which drawsattentionto the discrepancy between Allah’s mercy in providingsuchluxuriant rewards and the ingratitude of men and jinn.
