The Nepal National Library was established by HisMajesty’sGovernment in January 1957 (Poush 2013 BS). The corecollection wasthe personal library of Rajguru Hem Raj Pandey,spiritual advisorto the King, which had been purchased for thenation in 1956. Thecollection was moved to Sikri Dhoka, a buildingwithin the complexof Singha Durbar, a Rana Palace modeled onVersailles, and said tobe the largest in Asia at the time. SinghaDurbar was also the homeof the Central Secretariat Library, withwhich the Nepal NationalLibrary was merged. At that time the totalcollection numbered34,292 books and periodicals. The post of“Chairman” of the librarywas created at its establishment, and thefirst postholder was MrGangadhar Parajuli. Two assistant Pundits,one Bahidur, and fourArdalis were also appointed. It was not until1985 that aprofessional was appointed as Chief Librarian. The NepalNationalLibrary was moved to its present location, the Rana palacecalledHarihar Bhawan, Pulchowk, Lalitpur, in1961 (2017), whereitoccupies the southern wing on the first floor of the building.Inthe early sixties the National Library produced animpressiveseries of publications, making ancient handwritten textsavailablein printed form. Lending services were started in 1961,andcontinued for some years. However, full classificationandcataloguing of the stock had never been carried out, and intheearly eighties it was decided to suspend lending facilitiesinorder to embark on the mammoth task of cataloguing theentirestock. A full card catalogue for the Nepali, English, andHindicollections was finally completed in 1988. Since that timetheholdings have been made available to all for reading andreference,but in the interest of preservation, circulation serviceshave notbeen resumed.
