Hisbrotheris writer and editor Gregory S. Kearse of Silver Spring,Maryland.Siraj Wahhaj went to church religiously and went on tobecome aSunday school teacher as a teenager in a Baptist church.SirajWahhaj then later went on to the New York University on apartialscholarship. He also played basketball where he met ateammate whointerested him in the Nation of Islam, anAfrican-Americanmovement. He subsequently converted to Islam.In 1969 Siraj Wahhaj ended his schooling and joined the NationofIslam, changing his name to Jeffrey12x.[4] During this time hewasvocal in his belief that “white people are devils.” He said ofthis,“I preached it. I taught it.” Siraj Wahhaj says of hisinterest inthe Nation: “It wasn’t the theology that attracted meto the Nationof Islam at all… It was the kind of do-for-self blackpride.”When Elijah Muhammed died in 1975, “His teachings begantounravel in my mind”, and he became a Sunni Muslim withtheencouragement of Muhammad’s son Warith Deen Mohammed. Mohammedtookover and reorganized the Nation of Islam, urging members tocome toorthodox Islam. Kearse then changed his name again to SirajWahhaj,which means “bright light” in Arabic.
