Attention: The counts per minute (CPM) forthebackgroundnoise should be low (increase the noise setting ifnot).This iscamera noise not radiation noise basically. Iftheradiationincreases then also counts from the radiation adds totheCPMvalues (see our tables for the sensitivity). If you haveaphonewith 200 CPM for 100 uGy/h then the background noiseproducesfor100 nGy/h only 0.1 CPM. That means in 10 minutes ONEcounts in100minute TEN counts adding to the CPM0 (noise of sensor).So youneeda LONG time to measure for low radiation values onthisdevice.Attention: AM241 (smoke detectors) only emit ALPHArays,they getstuck in the plastic of the phones. H3 (tritium -watchesetc) arebeta emitters with 45 keV. They also get stuckquickly,mainlyalready in the watches. K40 (KCL for example contains16Bq/g) arebeta emitters with small amount of gamma (duetopositroncollisions)- you need also a long integration timetomeasure them.Same for TH rods (2% Thorium) mainly alpha rays,thenbeta and somegamma. Very small diameter ! You need a large areatodetect them(best GM with mica windows). The CMOS sensor ofthecamera only has2mmx2mm. Good objects are TH lenses (up to30%TH232), pitchblend(gamma of decay products) and CS137 forcheckingfood which mightbe contaminated (if larger 1 uSv/h).Don'texperiment withradiation sources !!! The threshold for this stage is about100-150uSv/h. Make sure that you didn't uncover your camera duringall themeasurement. Repeat the measurement and call the localauthorities.It is really serious situation but don't panic -everything will beok!The application was calibrated using Cs-137 ionizingradiationsource in the Institute of Nuclear Physics, Polish AcademyofSciences in Cracow, Poland.Cs-137 is one of the most dangerous isotopecontaminatingenvironment during nuclear accidents (e.g. in nuclearpower plantsetc.).How to use the app (the instruction is also shown to the useronthe first run):1st step:Cover main camera in your device using e.g. a piece of blacktape.You MUST cut off visible light completely!2nd step:Run the application, read the instruction again, scroll downandpush "Calibrate" button. The appusesthe noise induced by the radioactive radiation in thesmartphone'shardware to detect and quantify theradioactivity.The most important part for the detection of the radioactivityisthe camera chip of the smartphone. During the measumentabsolutelyno incident light is allowed for the camera. Thereforethe cameralens must be sealed e.g. by a black insulating tape. Ofcourse youcan keep the lens shut by your finger, but sometimes alittle lightshines through the fingers. In this case use at leastadditionallya cloth to shut the lens.First calibrate the radioactivity-meter foryoursmartphone-hardware:a) Fix the zero point where no radioactivity is caught bythesmartphone. The zero point must be fixed at the lowesttemperatureof all future measurements.b) Measure the radioactivity at a place, where thecurrentradioactivity is known and assign this known gauge value anditsunit to the value, measured by your smartphone to establisharelation between the internal hardware-dependent values ofthesmartphone and the real absolute quantity of radioactivity.Themore exact the calibration and the higher the gauge value,thebetter the measurement results.
