Dhammapada : Buddha Says 1.3.0
The Dhammapada is the best known andmostwidely esteemed text in the Pali Tipitaka, the sacredscriptures ofTheravada Buddhism. The work is included in theKhuddaka Nikaya("Minor Collection") of the Sutta Pitaka, but itspopularity hasraised it far above the single niche it occupies inthe scripturesto the ranks of a world religious classic. Composedin the ancientPali language, this slim anthology of versesconstitutes a perfectcompendium of the Buddha's teaching, comprising between its coversall the essential principleselaborated at length in the forty-oddvolumes of the Pali canon.According to the Theravada Buddhist tradition, each verse intheDhammapada was originally spoken by the Buddha in response toaparticular episode. Accounts of these, along with exegesis oftheverses, are preserved in the classic commentary to thework, compiled by the great scholiast Bhadantacariya Buddhaghosa inthefifth century C.E. on the basis or material going back toveryancient times. The contents of the verses, however, transcendthelimited and particular circumstances of their origin, reachingoutthrough the ages to various types of people in all thediversesituations of life. For the simple and unsophisticatedtheDhammapada is a sympathetic counselor; for theintellectuallyoverburdened its clear and direct teachings inspirehumility andreflection; for the earnest seeker it is a perennialsource ofinspiration and practical instruction. Insights thatflashed intothe heart of the Buddha have crystallized into theseluminousverses of pure wisdom. As profound expressions ofpracticalspirituality, each verse is a guideline to right living. The Buddhaunambiguously pointed out that whoever earnestlypractices theteachings found in the Dhammapada will taste the blissofemancipation.Due to its immense importance, the Dhammapada has beentranslatedinto numerous languages. In English alone severaltranslations areavailable, including editions by such notedscholars as Max Mullerand Dr. S. Radhakrishnan. However, whenpresented from anon-Buddhist frame of reference, the teachings ofthe Buddhainevitably suffer some distortion. This, in fact, hasalreadyhappened with our anthology: an unfortunate selection ofrenderingshas sometimes suggested erroneous interpretations, whilefootnoteshave tended to be judgmental. The present translation was originally written in thelate1950's. Some years earlier, while consulting a numberofEnglish-language editions of the Dhammapada, it was observedthatthe renderings were either too free and inaccurate or toopedantic, and it was therefore felt that a new translation avoidingthese twoextremes would serve a valuable purpose. The finishedresult ofthat project, presented here, is a humble attempt by apracticingfollower of the Buddha to transmit the spirit andcontent, as wellas the language and style, of the originalteachings. In preparing this volume I have had access to numerouseditionsand translations of the Dhammapada into variouslanguages, including Sanskrit, Hindi, Bengali, Sinhala, Burmese andNepali. Iparticularly benefited from the excellent translations ofthe workby the late Venerable Narada Mahathera of Vajirarama,Colombo, SriLanka, and Professor Bhagwat of Poona, India; To them Iacknowledgemy debt. A few verses contain riddles, references oranalogies thatmay not be evident to the reader. The meanings ofthese areprovided either in parentheses or notes, and fortheirinterpretation I have relied on the explanations giveninBhadantacariya Buddhaghosa's commentary. Verses discussed inthenotes are indicated in the text by an asterisk at the end oftheverse.
