The Confederacy, often simply called the South,grew toinclude eleven states, and although they claimed thirteenstatesand additional western territories, the Confederacy wasneverdiplomatically recognized by any foreign country. The statesthatremained loyal and did not declare secession were known astheUnion or the North. The war had its origin in the factious issueofslavery, especially the extension of slavery into thewesternterritories.[N 1] After four years of combat, which had leftaround750,000 Americans, Union and Confederate, dead and haddestroyedmuch of the South's infrastructure, the Confederacycollapsed andslavery was abolished. Then began the Reconstructionand theprocesses of restoring national unity and guaranteeing civilrightsto the freed slaves.In the 1860 presidential election, Republicans, led byAbrahamLincoln, supported banning slavery in all the U.S.territories,something the Southern states viewed as a violation oftheirconstitutional rights and as being part of a plan toeventuallyabolish slavery. The Republican Party, dominant in theNorth,secured a majority of the electoral votes, and Lincoln waselectedthe first Republican president, but before his inauguration,sevenslave states with cotton-based economies formed theConfederacy.The first six to secede had the highest proportions ofslaves intheir populations, a total of 48.8 percent.[12] Eightremainingslave states continued to reject calls for secession.OutgoingDemocratic President James Buchanan and the incomingRepublicansrejected secession as illegal. Lincoln's March 4, 1861inauguraladdress declared his administration would not initiatecivil war.Speaking directly to "the Southern States," hereaffirmed, "I haveno purpose, directly or indirectly to interferewith theinstitution of slavery in the United States where itexists. Ibelieve I have no lawful right to do so, and I have noinclinationto do so."[13] Confederate forces seized numerousfederal fortswithin territory claimed by the Confederacy. Effortsat compromisefailed, and both sides prepared for war.
