It wasamongShakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime and, alongwith Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays.Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal younglovers.Romeo and Juliet belongs to a tradition of tragicromancesstretching back to antiquity. Its plot is based on anItalian tale, translated into verse as The Tragical History ofRomeus and Julietby Arthur Brooke in 1562 and retold in prose inPalace of Pleasureby William Painter in 1567. Shakespeare borrowedheavily from bothbut, to expand the plot, developed supportingcharacters, particularly Mercutio and Paris. Believed to have beenwrittenbetween 1591 and 1595, the play was first published in aquartoversion in 1597. This text was of poor quality, and latereditionscorrected it, bringing it more in line withShakespeare'soriginal.Published: 1597Categorie(s): Fiction, Drama, Romance--FEATURES--*Book divided in chapters for easy reading*Day/Night option*Font size and color option*Bookmark option*Flip pages like real bookAbout Shakespeare:William Shakespeare (baptised 26 April 1564 – died 23 April1616)was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as thegreatestwriter in the English language and the world'spre-eminentdramatist. He is often called England's national poetand the "Bardof Avon" (or simply "The Bard"). His surviving worksconsist of 38plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, andseveral otherpoems. His plays have been translated into every majorlivinglanguage, and are performed more often than those of anyotherplaywright. Shakespeare was born and raised inStratford-upon-Avon.At the age of 18 he married Anne Hathaway, whobore him threechildren: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith.Between 1585 and1592 he began a successful career in London as anactor, writer, and part owner of the playing company the LordChamberlain's Men,later known as the King's Men. He appears to haveretired toStratford around 1613, where he died three years later.Few recordsof Shakespeare's private life survive, and there hasbeenconsiderable speculation about such matters as hissexuality, religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed tohim werewritten by others. Shakespeare produced most of his knownworkbetween 1590 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comediesandhistories, genres he raised to the peak of sophisticationandartistry by the end of the sixteenth century. Next he wrotemainlytragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, King Lear, andMacbeth, considered some of the finest examples in theEnglishlanguage. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, alsoknown asromances, and collaborated with other playwrights. Many ofhisplays were published in editions of varying quality andaccuracyduring his lifetime, and in 1623 two of his formertheatricalcolleagues published the First Folio, a collected editionof hisdramatic works that included all but two of the playsnowrecognised as Shakespeare's. Shakespeare was a respected poetandplaywright in his own day, but his reputation did not rise toitspresent heights until the nineteenth century. The Romantics, inparticular, acclaimed Shakespeare's genius, and theVictorianshero-worshipped Shakespeare with a reverence that GeorgeBernardShaw called "bardolatry". In the twentieth century, his workwasrepeatedly adopted and rediscovered by new movements inscholarshipand performance. His plays remain highly popular todayand areconsistently performed and reinterpreted in diverse culturalandpolitical contexts throughout the world.
