C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada was born in 1896in Calcutta,India. He first met his spiritual master, SrilaBhaktisiddhantaSarasvati Gosvami, in Calcutta in 1922.Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati,a prominent devotional scholar and thefounder of sixty-fourbranches of Gaudiya Mathas (Vedic institutes),liked this educatedyoung man and convinced him to dedicate his lifeto teaching Vedicknowledge in the Western world. Srila Prabhupadabecame hisstudent, and eleven years later (1933) at Allahabad, hebecame hisformally initiated disciple. At their first meeting, in1922, SrilaBhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura requested SrilaPrabhupada tobroadcast Vedic knowledge through the Englishlanguage. In theyears that followed, Srila Prabhupada wrote acommentary on theBhagavad-gita and in 1944, without assistance,started an Englishfortnightly magazine. Recognizing SrilaPrabhupada's philosophicallearning and devotion, the GaudiyaVaisnava Society honored him in1947 with the title "Bhaktivedanta."In 1950, at the age offifty-four, Srila Prabhupada retired frommarried life, and fouryears later he adopted the vanaprastha(retired) order to devotemore time to his studies and writing.Srila Prabhupada traveled tothe holy city of Vrndavana, where helived in very humblecircumstances in the historic medieval templeof Radha-Damodara.There he engaged for several years in deep studyand writing. Heaccepted the renounced order of life (sannyasa) in1959. AtRadha-Damodara, Srila Prabhupada began work on hislife'smasterpiece: a multivolume translation and commentary onthe18,000-verse Srimad-Bhagavatam (Bhagavata Purana). He alsowroteEasy Journey to Other Planets. After publishing three volumesofBhagavatam, Srila Prabhupada came to the United States, in 1965,tofulfill the mission of his spiritual master. Since that time,HisDivine Grace has written over sixty volumes ofauthoritativetranslations, commentaries and summary studies of thephilosophicaland religious classics of India. In 1965, when hefirst arrived byfreighter in New York City, Srila Prabhupada waspracticallypenniless. It was after almost a year of greatdifficulty that heestablished the International Society for KrishnaConsciousness inJuly of 1966. Under his careful guidance, theSociety has grewwithin a decade to a worldwide confederation ofalmost one hundredasramas, schools, temples, institutes and farmcommunities. SrilaPrabhupada's most significant contribution,however, is his books.Highly respected by the academic communityfor theirauthoritativeness, depth and clarity, they are used asstandardtextbooks in numerous college courses. His writings havebeentranslated into eleven languages. The Bhaktivedanta BookTrust,established in 1972 exclusively to publish the works of HisDivineGrace, has thus become the world's largest publisher of booksinthe field of Indian religion and philosophy. In the last tenyearsof his life, in spite of his advanced age, Srila Prabhupadacircledthe globe twelve times on lecture tours that have took himto sixcontinents. In spite of such a vigorous schedule, SrilaPrabhupadacontinued to write prolifically. His writings constituteaveritable library of Vedic philosophy, religion, literatureandculture.
