Digital India[1][2] is an initiativeofGovernment of India to integrate the government departments andthepeople of India. It aims at ensuring the government servicesaremade available to citizens electronically by reducingpaperwork.The initiative also includes plan to connect rural areaswithhigh-speed internet networks. Digital India has threecorecomponents. These include:[3]The creation of digital infrastructure inDelivering services digitallyDigital literacy.The project is slated for completion by 2019. A two-wayplatformwill be created where both the service providers and theconsumersstand to benefit. The scheme will be monitored andcontrolled bythe Digital India Advisory group which will be chairedby theMinistry of Communications and IT. In addition, there are plans to restructuretheNational Informatics Centre. This project is one among thetoppriority projects of the Modi Administration.The initiative is commendable and deserves full support ofallstakeholders. However, the initiative also lacks manycrucialcomponents including lack of legal framework, absence ofprivacy[4] and data protection laws,[5] civil libertiesabusepossibilities,[6] lack of parliamentary oversightfore-surveillance in India,[7] lack of intelligence related reformsinIndia,[8] insecure Indian cyberspace,[9] etc. These issues havetobe managed first before introducing DI initiative in India.DigitalIndia project is worth exploring and implementation despiteitsshortcomings that can be rectified beforeitsimplementation.[10]
