“Bartleby the Scrivener: A Story ofWallStreet”is a short story by Herman Melville. The storyfirstappeared, anonymously, in Putnam’s Magazine in two parts. Thefirstpartappeared in November 1853, with the conclusion publishedinDecember1853.Various philosophical influences can be found in"BartlebytheScrivener".There are various analogues between Bartleby and lepersofancienttimes.Though no great success at the time of publication,"BartlebytheScrivener" is now among the most noted ofAmericanshortstories. The story has been adapted for film three times: in1970,starringPaul Scofield; in France, in 1976, by MauriceRonet, starring MichelLonsdale; and in 2001, Bartleby starringCrispinGlover.Bartleby is a kind of clerk, a copyist, "who obstinatelyrefusestogo on doing the sort of writing demanded of him." Duringthespringof 1851, Melville felt similarly about his work on MobyDick. Thus,Bartleby can be seen to represent Melville’s frustrationwithhisown situation as a writer, and the story itself is “aboutawriterthat forsakes conventional modes because ofanirresistiblepreoccupation with the most bafflingphilosophicalquestions.”
