In the Name of Allah the most Gracious most Merciful, Umrah GuidAppis the product of AskIslamPedia Umrah is an Islamic riteandconsists of pilgrimage to the Ka‘bah. A set of religiousanddevotional rites performed in Makkah at any time of the year inastate of dress and condition known as Ihram with the intentionofperforming certain religious rites there according to themethodprescribed by the Prophet Muhammad (May Allah honour Him andgrantHim peace). It has also been referred to in English as theminorpilgrimage andmajor pilgrimage being the Hajj. Umrah canbeperformed in few hours whereas Hajj requires 6 days which arefixedfrom 8th of Zilhijjah to 13th of Zillhijjah. Itconsistsessentially of Ihram (dress and conditions), Tawaaf(i.e.circumambulation) around the Ka‘bah (seven times), and Sa‘ee(i.e.walking between As-Safa and Al-Marwah (seven times) andhaircutting or shaving. It is called minor Hajj since it need notbeperformed at a particular time of the year and itsperformancerequires fewer ceremonies than the Hajj. It alsorequires someobligations from the pilgrim until the state of Ihramis ended. InArabic, the word 'Umrah is derived from I'timaar whichmeans avisit. However, 'Umrah in Islamic terminology, means payinga visitto Ka' bah, performing Tawaaf (circumambulation) around it,walkingbetween Safaa and Marwah seven times. A performer of 'Umrahputsoff his Ihram by having his hair shaved or cut. 'Umrah canbeperformed along with Hajj and in other days as well. 'Umrah canbeperformed during anytime in the year, there is no fixed timefor'Umrah. Obligations (Wajibath) of `Umrah a) Ihram: which isassumedat the Meeqat. b) Tawaaf: around the House. c) Sa'ee:walkingbetween As-Safaa and Al-Marwah, which consists of sevencircuits.d) Hair: Shaving or trimming the hair During 'Umrah,pilgrims donot go to Mina, 'Arafah and Muzdalifah or throw pebbleson theJamrahs (stone pillars representing devils) or offeranimalsacrifice. Surah Al Hajj (The Hajj)This Surah takes its name from v. 27.Period of RevelationAs this Surah contains the characteristics of both the Makkanandthe Madani Surahs, the commentators have differed as to itsperiodof revelation, but in the light of its style and themes weare ofthe opinion that a part of it (vv. 1-24) was sent down in thelaststage of the Makki life of the Holy Prophet a littlebeforemigration and the rest (vv. 25-78) during the first stage ofhisMadani life. That is why this Surah combines the characteristicsofboth the Makki and the Madani Surahs.The sudden change of the style from v. 25 shows that probablyvv.25-78 were sent down in the month of Zul-Hijjah in the veryfirstyear after Hijrah. This is indicated by vv. 25-41 andconfirmed bythe occasion of the revelation of vv. 39-40. It appearsthat themonth of Zul-Hijjah must have brought to the immigrantsnostalgicmemories of their homes in Makkah and naturally they musthavethought of their Sacred City and of their Hajj congregationthere,and grieved to think that the mushrik Quraish had debarredthemfrom visiting the Sacred Mosque. Therefore, they might evenhavebeen praying for and expecting Divine permission to wagewaragainst those tyrants who had expelled them from their homesanddeprived them of visiting the House of Allah and made itdifficultfor them to follow the way of Islam.It was at this psychological occasion that these verses weresentdown. That is why the purpose for which Masjid-al- Haram wasbuilthas been specifically mentioned. It has been made plainthatHajj(pilgrimage) had been enjoined for the worship of OneAllah.But it is an irony that afterwards it had been dedicated totherituals of shirk and the worshipers of One Allah had beendebarredfrom visiting it. Therefore, permission for waging waragainstthose tyrants has been given to oust them from there andtoestablish the righteous way of life for establishing virtueanderadicating evil. According to Ibn Abbas, Mujahid, UrwahbinZubair, Zaid bin Aslam, Muqatil bin Hayyan, Qatadah and othergreatcommentators, v. 39 is the first verse that grants theMuslimspermission to wage war.
