He became interestedinmusicafter seeing Elvis Presley perform on The Ed Sullivan Showin1956and got a guitar, but he didn't start playing seriouslyuntil1963.In 1965, he joined his first band, theBeatles-influencedCastiles.They got as far as playing in New YorkCity, but broke upin 1967around the time Springsteen graduated fromhigh school andbeganfrequenting clubs in Asbury Park, New Jersey.From there,hebriefly joined Earth, a hard rock band in the style ofCream.Alsoin the hard rock vein was his next group, Child (soonrenamedSteelMill), which featured keyboard player Danny FedericianddrummerVini Lopez. (Later on, guitarist Steve Van Zandt joinedonbass.)Steel Mill played in California in 1969, drawing aravereview inSan Francisco and even a contract offer from arecordlabel. Butthey broke up in 1971, and Springsteen formed a bigband,theshort-lived Dr. Zoom & the Cosmic Boom, quicklysupersededbythe Bruce Springsteen Band. Along with Federici, Lopez,andVanZandt (who switched back to guitar), this groupalsoincludedpianist David Sancious and bassist Garry Tallent, plusahornsection that didn't last long before being replaced byasinglesaxophonist, Clarence Clemons. Due to a lack ofwork,however,Springsteen broke up the band and began playing soloshowsin NewYork City. It was as a solo performer that he acquiredamanager,Mike Appel, who arranged an audition for legendaryColumbiaRecordstalent scout John Hammond. Hammond signedSpringsteen toColumbiain 1972. In preparing his debut LP, Greetingsfrom AsburyPark,N.J., Springsteen immediately re-hired most of hisbackupband,Federici, Lopez, Sancious, Tallent, and Clemons. (VanZandt,ontour with the Dovells, was mostly unavailable.) Thealbumwentunnoticed upon its initial release in January1973(althoughManfred Mann's Earth Band would turn its lead-offtrack,"Blindedby the Light," into a number one hit four yearslater, andthe LPitself has since gone double platinum). The Wild,theInnocent& the E Street Shuffle (September 1973) also failedtoselldespite some rave reviews. (It too has gone doubleplatinum.)Thefollowing year, Springsteen revised his backup group-- nowdubbedthe E Street Band -- as Lopez and Sancious left, andMaxWeinberg(drums) and Roy Bittan (piano) joined, and in 1975,VanZandtreturned to the group. With this unit he touredextensivelywhileworking on the LP that represented his last chancewithColumbia.By the time Born to Run (August 1975) was released,thecritics anda significant cult audience were with him, and thetitlesongbecame a Top 40 hit while the album reached the Top Ten,goingonto sell six million copies. Despitethisbreakthrough,Springsteen's momentum was broken by a legaldispute,as he splitfrom Appel and brought in Jon Landau (a rockcritic whohadfamously called him the "rock & roll future" in a1974concertreview) as his new manager. The legal issues took until1977toresolve, during which time Springsteen was unable torecord.(Onebeneficiary of this problem was Patti Smith, towhomSpringsteengave the composition "Because the Night," which,withsome lyricalrevisions by her, became her only Top 40 hit inthespring of1978.)
