After her subgenre was declared dead,Summerwas verymuch part of the evolution of dance music. Throughthefeministanthem "She Works Hard for the Money," she became anMTVstar, andshe continued to top the club chart withdisco-rootedhouse singlesthrough 2010, 35 years after herbreakthrough. Indeed, she was theultimate disco diva. Summer wasborn LaDonna AndreGaines onDecember 31, 1948, and grew up inBoston's Mission Hillsection.Part of a religious family, she firstsang in her church'sgospelchoir, and as a teenager performed with arock group calledtheCrow. After high school, she moved to New Yorkto sing and actinstage productions, and soon landed a role in aGerman productionofHair. She moved to Europe around 1968-1969, andspent a year intheGerman cast, after which she became part of theHair companyinVienna. She joined the Viennese Folk Opera, and laterreturnedtoGermany, where she settled in Munich and met andmarriedHelmutSommer, adopting an Anglicized version of his lastname.Summerperformed in various stage musicals and worked as astudiovocalistin Munich, recording demos and background vocals. Herfirstsolorecording was 1971's "Sally Go 'Round the Roses," butsuccesswouldnot come until 1974, when she metproducers/songwritersGiorgioMoroder and Pete Bellotte while workingon a Three DogNightrecord. The three teamed up for the single "TheHostage,"whichbecame a hit around Western Europe, and Summerreleased herfirstalbum, Lady of the Night, in Europe only. In 1975,thetriorecorded "Love to Love You Baby," inspired by SergeGainsbourgandJane Birkin's lush, heavy-breathing opus "JeT'aime...MoiNonPlus." Powered by Summer's graphic moans, "Love toLove YouBaby"became a massive hit in Europe, and drew theattentionofCasablanca Records, which put the track out inAmerica.A17-minute, side-long epic on the LP of the same name, itssingleversion topped the Billboard club chart and climbed tonumbertwoon the Hot 100. In the wake of "Love to Love You Baby,"albums(asopposed to just singles) became an important forum forSummerandher producers. The 1976 follow-up Love Trilogycontainedanotherside-long suite in "Try Me (I Know We Can Make ItWork),"anddemonstrated Moroder and Bellotte's growingsophisticationasarrangers with its lush, sweeping strings. FourSeasons ofLove, released later in the year, was a concept album withonetrackdedicated to each season, and 1977's I RememberYesterdayfeatureda variety of genre exercises. Despite the album'stitle, itproduced the most forward-looking single in SummerandMoroder'scatalog, the monumental "I Feel Love." Eschewingthestrings andtypical disco excess, "I Feel Love" was the firstmajorpop hitrecorded with an entirely synthesized backing track;itslean, sleek arrangement and driving, hypnotic pulse laidthegroundworknot only for countless Euro-dance imitators, but alsoforthetechno revolution of the '80s and '90s.Hot StuffShe Works Hard For The MoneyI Feel LoveLast DanceBad GirlsMac Arthur ParkDim All The LightsLove To Love You BabyOn The RadioI Feel Love feat So You Think You Can DanceI Feel Love feat Westlife
