The history of theAmericanBasketballAssociation is almost as colorful as the iconicred,white and blueball which represents it.The original ABA was formed in 1967 and lasted 10 seasonspriortomerging four of its teams into the NBA. In fact, 50% of the NBA AllStarteam in the first yearof the merger were ABA players.Dick Tinkham and Joe Newman decided to bring back the ABAin1999,after the original ABA had been dormant for nearly 30years.Thistime, to avoid the lack of profitability of the ABA inthepast,they decided to improve the business model by makingitmoreaffordable to own a team by reducing the operating costs,costoftravel and venues, as well as forming strong bondswithcommunitiesand encouraging family friendly entertainment. Theykepttheexciting rules and style of play, and the result is that theABAisnow one of the largest professional sports leagues in theUS,withover 70 teams competing for the Championship thisseason,across 10divisions. Their community work with Fast BreakforReading,Bullies are Cowards, Proud to Serve America and theBoysand GirlsClubs of America and have made major impacts incitiesthroughoutthe US.Today, the ABA has nearly 1000 players competing attheprofessionallevel, over 200 coaches and over 200 officials. Itismade up offormer NBA players, NCAA Div 1 and 2 players,McDonaldsAllAmericans, international players, and is the platformforsendingoff many players to international teams.The ABA will continue to grow as it continues to formvaluabletieswith basketball governing bodies, and grows its numberofteams.Network coverage is set to broaden, as is the fanbaseandmerchandising. Big things are in store for the ABA, andthered,white and blue ball is set to be around for a longtimetocome.
