হযরত হূদ (আঃ) দুর্ধর্ষ ও শক্তিশালী ‘আদজাতিরপ্রতি প্রেরিত হয়েছিলেন। আল্লাহর গযবে ধ্বংসপ্রাপ্ত বিশ্বেরপ্রধানছয়টি জাতির মধ্যে কওমে নূহ-এর পরে কওমে ‘আদ ছিল দ্বিতীয় জাতি।হূদ(আঃ) ছিলেন এদেরই বংশধর। ‘আদ ও ছামূদ ছিল নূহ (আঃ)-এর পুত্রসামেরবংশধর এবং নূহের পঞ্চম অথবা অষ্টম অধঃস্তন পুরুষ। ইরামপুত্র‘আদ-এরবংশধরগণ ‘আদ ঊলা’ বা প্রথম ‘আদ এবং অপর পুত্রের সন্তানছামূদ-এরবংশধরগণ ‘আদ ছানী বা দ্বিতীয় ‘আদ বলে খ্যাত।‘আদ ও ছামূদ উভয়গোত্রইইরাম-এর দু’টি শাখা। সেকারণ ‘ইরাম’ কথাটি ‘আদ ও ছামূদ উভয়গোত্রেরজন্য সমভাবে প্রযোজ্য। এজন্য কুরআনে কোথাও ‘আদ ঊলা’ (নাজম ৫০)এবংকোথাও ‘ইরাম যাতিল ‘ইমাদ’ (ফজর ৭) শব্দ ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।‘আদ সম্প্রদায়ের ১৩টি পরিবার বা গোত্র ছিল। আম্মান হ’তে শুরুকরেহাযারামাউত ও ইয়ামন পর্যন্ত তাদের বসতি ছিল।তাদের ক্ষেত-খামারগুলোছিলঅত্যন্ত সজীব ও শস্যশ্যামল। তাদের প্রায় সব ধরনের বাগ-বাগিচাছিল।তারা ছিল সুঠামদেহী ও বিরাট বপু সম্পন্ন। আল্লাহ তা‘আলা তাদেরপ্রতিঅনুগ্রহের দুয়ার খুলে দিয়েছিলেন। কিন্তু বক্রবুদ্ধির কারণে এসবনে‘মতইতাদের কাল হয়ে দাঁড়ালো। তারা নিজেরা পথভ্রষ্ট হয়েছিল ওঅন্যকেপথভ্রষ্ট করেছিল। তারা শক্তি মদমত্ত হয়ে ‘আমাদের চেয়ে শক্তিশালীআর কেআছে’ (ফুছছিলাত/হামীম সাজদাহ ১৫) বলে ঔদ্ধত্য প্রদর্শন করতেশুরুকরেছিল। তারা আল্লাহর ইবাদত পরিত্যাগ করে নূহ (আঃ)-এর আমলে ফেলেআসামূর্তিপূজার শিরক-এর পুনরায় প্রচলন ঘটালো। মাত্র কয়েক পুরুষ আগেঘটেযাওয়া নূহের সর্বগ্রাসী প্লাবনের কথা তারা বেমালুম ভুলে গেল।ফলেআল্লাহ পাক তাদের হেদায়াতের জন্য তাদেরই মধ্য হ’তে হূদ (আঃ)-কেনবীহিসাবে প্রেরণ করলেন। উল্লেখ্য যে, নূহের প্লাবনের পরে এরাইসর্বপ্রথমমূর্তিপূজা শুরু করে।হযরত হূদ (আঃ) ও কওমে ‘আদ সম্পর্কে পবিত্র কুরআনের ১৭টি সূরায়৭৩টিআয়াতে বর্ণিত হয়েছে।Hud has sometimes been identified with Eber, an ancestor oftheIsraelites who is mentioned in the Old Testament.He is said to have been a subject of a kingdom named afteritsfounder, ʿĀd, a fourth generation descendant of Noah (hisfatherbeing Uz, the son of Aram, who was the son of Shem and a sonofNoah.
