Karl does not knowthat SenatorJacob is his uncle, but Mr. Jacob recognizes him andtakes him awayfrom the stoker.Karl stays with his uncle for some time but is later abandonedbyhim after making a visit to his uncle's friend without hisuncle'sfull approval. Wandering aimlessly, he becomes friends withtwodrifters named Robinson and Delamarche. They promise to findhim ajob, but they sell his suit without permission, eat his foodinfront of him without offering him any, and ransack hisbelongings.Finally, Karl departs from them on bad terms after he'soffered ajob by a manageress at Hotel Occidental. He works thereas alift-boy. One day Robinson shows up drunk at his work askinghim formoney. Afraid of losing his job being seen talking with afriend,which is forbidden for lift-boys, Karl agrees to lend himmoney,then commits the far worse offence of bunking a drunk-sickRobinsonin the lift-boy dorm.Being dismissed for leaving his post, Karl agrees not only topayfor Robinson's taxi, but also joins him. They travel toDelamarche'splace. Delamarche is now staying with a wealthy andobese lady namedBrunelda. She wants to take in Karl as herservant. Karl refuses,but Delamarche physically forces him to stayand he is imprisoned inher apartment. He tries to break out, butis beaten by Delamarcheand Robinson. On the balcony, he chats witha student who tells himhe should stay, because it is hard to finda job elsewhere. Hedecides to stay.One day he sees an advertisement for the Nature TheatreofOklahoma, which is looking for employees. The theatre promisestofind employment for everyone. Karl applies for a job andgetsengaged as a "technical worker".
