Students may taketheNBDHE no sooner thanfour months before they are to receive adentalhygiene diploma andmust obtain certification of approvalfortesting from the directorof their program.NBDHE is a computer-based exam that is administered atPearsonVUEtesting centers located throughout the UnitedStates,itsterritories, and Canada. The center is equippedwithvideosurveillance cameras and Pearson staff members aretrainedtodiligently observe test-takers. Candidates taking theNBDHE willbeprovided a dry erase board and a dry erase marker touse asscratchspace during the exam. Candidates canelectronicallyschedule theirown testing time and date throughoutthe year.Administering the NBDHE takes approximately 9 hours,includinganoptional hour-long lunch break. Candidates must reporttotheirtesting centers 30 minutes before the exam starts andcompletea15-minute exam tutorial. Candidates will then be giventhree andahalf hours to complete 200 discipline-based items.Thisfirstsession will cover many skills, including use ofpreventiveagents,assessing patient characteristics, andinterpretingradiographs.After the hour-long optional lunch break, asecondfour-hour longsession will contain 150 patient-case items.Items onthe exam willcover topics that dental hygienists must knowtoperform theirduties and the American DentalAssociationUniversal/National toothnotation system will be used.
