Thanks to the then recently-inventedprintingpress, the result was widely disseminated andcontributedsignificantly to the development of today's modern HighGermanlanguage. While he was sequestered in the Wartburg Castle (1521–22)Lutherbegan to translate the New Testament from ancient Greek intoGermanin order to make it more accessible to all the people of the"HolyRoman Empire of the German nation." He translated from theGreektext, using Erasmus' second edition (1519) of the GreekNewTestament, known as the Textus Receptus. Luther did nottranslatefrom the Latin Vulgate translation, which is the Latintranslationofficially used by the Roman Catholic Church. LikeErasmus, Lutherhad learned Greek at the Latin schools led by theBrethren of theCommon Life (Erasmus in Deventer, the Netherlands, and Luther inMagdeburg). These lay brothers added Greek as a newsubject totheir curriculum in the late 15th century. At that timeGreek wasseldom taught even at universities. To help him in translating into contemporary German, Lutherwouldmake forays into nearby towns and markets to listen topeoplespeaking. He wanted to ensure their comprehension bytranslating asclosely as possible to their contemporary languageusage. Histranslation was published in September 1522, six monthsafter hehad returned to Wittenberg.
