The ancient Khmer game of Tigers and Cows is the national gameofCambodia where it is known as Kla Si Ko (ខ្លាសុីគោ). The gameofTigers and Cows is played on a board of 4 x 4 cells. There isatwo-player game of uneven sides and is played with fourpiecesrepresenting tigers and 12 pieces representing cows. 1- Howto playThe game has two phases. In the first phase, the Tigers areput atcorner of the board. Players take turns to plays and cowsstartfirst.Only tigers can move at the first phase. Once all cowshavebeen placed to the board, the second phase started in whichthecows can move too. 2- Move and Capture All tigers and Cows canonly1 step upward, downward or left, right. The tiger can hopoveradjacent cow into a vacant cell beyond along a straight cell.Thelatter move captures the hopped-over cow which is removed fromtheboard. Cows can not hop or take tigers. Tigers cannot hopoverother tigers. 3- Finishing A game is won by the cows iftheysucceed in preventing all tigers from being able to move. Agame iswon by the tigers if they capture (eat) all cows orpreventing allcows from being able to move.

Rek is popular Ancient Khmer Board Game played by two people ontheboard of 8X8 squares. The Cambodian transitive verb“Rek”(ល្បែងរែក) means ‘carry on one’s shoulder a pole at each endofwhich is a container, bundle or object. It was pointed out thatthegame was popular among military troops. Today, it is also playedbyCambodian women. Objective The object of the game is to“capture”instead of checkmate the opponent’s King. All units may becapturedin two ways : when they are “Rek” by an enemy unit in theanalogythat they are the containers carried away by that enemyunit. Thislater way of capture actually bears the name of the game.when theyare tightly surrounded or trapped by the enemy units andthus haveno legal move. It also has two different forces of 32units intotal . Each side starts with a force of 16 units: One Kingand 15Men. All the Men have the same value and physical shape. Andtheyall, including the Kings, move like the Boat or Rook. AnotherStyleof Play​ (Taunt enemry to Rek) The Rek also has its ownspecialstyle of play. It is named “Min Rek Chanh” (Not Rek Loseifopponent taunt). The object of the game is still thesame,capturing the opponent’s King. But, there is only one legalway tocapture the enemy units, including the King: “Rek” them twoat atime. The Kings may not move at all, not even a square. Theyare“palace kings”! Other setting features and opening setup arethesame as those of the regular Rek. The unique characteristic ofthisstyle of play is that a player’s order of Rek to the other mustbehonored, otherwise the latter loses and the game is over.So,strategic and deliberate sacrifices are the mind set behindwinningthe game. Usually the game is over when one player orders a“right”series of the opponent’s consecutive moves to ‘Rek’ hisunits whichultimately will lead to the capture or Rek of theopponent’s Kingin return. BUT, if he orders the wrong series of theopponent’smoves, he ends up losing his force without anydesirableconsequence. Thus the game demands a long-term andcoherentstrategic planning to get the right orders of move. In thiskind ofplay, you are in a more dangerous situation for preservingtoo manyown units, but if you do not have enough of them to designyourscheme of making a right series of the opponent’s moves, it isnotgood either.

Chess is played on a square board of eight rows (called ranks anddenoted with numbers 1 to 8) and eight columns (called files anddenoted with letters a to h). Rules --------- The Pawn (called เบี้ย bia, acowry shell, formerly used for money) Moves and captures like apawn in international chess, but cannot move two steps on the firstmove and, therefore, cannot be captured en passant. A pawn thatreaches the sixth rank is always promoted to a queen (med). TheQueen (called เม็ด met), the weakest piece, moves one step in anydiagonal direction, like the fers in shatranj, or a cat sword indai shogi. The Bishop (called โคน khon, nobleman or mask) moves onestep in any diagonal direction or one step forward, like the silvergeneral in shogi. The Knight (called ม้า ma, horse) moves like aknight in Western chess: two steps in one direction and then onestep perpendicular to that movement. It jumps over any pieces inthe way. The Rook (called เรือ ruea, boat) moves like a rook inWestern chess: any number of steps horizontally or vertically. Angmoves like a king in international chess – one step in anydirection. He is allowed to make a Ses (knight jump) at his firstmove (This special move is no more used in Thailand). The game endswhen the king is checkmated.
