Dolores Janney Rivera Saavedra,[3][4] (July2,1969 – December 9, 2012), known as Jenni Rivera, wasaMexican-American singer, songwriter, actress, televisionproducer,spokesperson, and entrepreneur known for her work withinthe Bandaand ranchera music genres. In life and death, severalmedia outletsincluding CNN, Billboard, Fox News, and The New YorkTimes" havelabeled her as the most important female figure and topsellingfemale artist in the Mexican music genre. Billboard magazinenamedher the "top Latin artist of 2013", the "best selling Latinartistof 2013".

Rivera began recording music in 1992. Her recordings oftenhadthemes of social issues, infidelity, and relationships.Riverareleased her first studio album, Si Quieres Verme Llorar, inthelate 1990s, failing to attain commercial success; however, sheroseto prominence in the United States and Mexico with hermajor-labeldebut, Parrandera, Rebelde y Atrevida. In the early2000s, she wasoften criticized and was refused bookings at venuesacrossCalifornia for performing Banda music—a male-dominated musicgenre.However, her popularity grew after she won the Lo NuestroAward forRegional Mexican Female Artist of the Year in 2007, whichshe wonnine consecutive times. Her tenth studio album, Jenni (2008)becameher first No.1 record on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chartinthe United States. In 2010, she appeared in and producedthereality TV show Jenni Rivera Presents: Chiquis & Raq-C.Shealso appeared in and produced I Love Jenni starting in 2011through2013 and Chiquis 'n Control in 2012. Her acting debut was inthefilm Filly Brown, which was released in 2013.

Rivera garnered nominations and awards from Latin music'smostprestigious accolades. Over the course of her career shewasawarded two Oye! Awards (Mexico's equivalent to the UnitedStates'Grammy Awards), two Billboard Music Awards, twenty-twoBillboardLatin Music Awards, eleven Billboard Mexican Music Awardsandeighteen Lo Nuestro Awards. She received four LatinGrammynominations. She has a star on the Las Vegas Walk of Stars,and sheis one of the best-selling regional Mexican artists of alltime,having sold more than 20 million records worldwide.

Aside from music, she was active in her community and donatedhertime to civic causes. The National Coalition AgainstDomesticViolence appointed her its spokesperson in the UnitedStates. Aproclamation was given "officially naming" August 6 “JenniRiveraDay” by the Los Angeles City Council for all her charity workandcommunity involvement.

Rivera, along with six others, died in a plane crashnearIturbide, Nuevo León on December 9, 2012. Her deathmadeinternational headlines for weeks. In December 2014,Mexicanauthorities closed the investigation on what brought theplanedown. Mexican Director of Civil Aviation, Gilberto GómezMeyer,stated that the results of the plane crash have comebackinconclusive and that they are unable to determine the exactcauseof the crash. Lawsuits involving the owners of the plane,Rivera'sestate, and family members of those on board with Riverahave beenfiled in The Superior Court of Los Angeles County.
