Chennai Walkabout is an effort to bringheritage tours to your mobile phone and tablet. Chances are thatyou have often stood in front of a heritage building, object orwork of art and wished that there was someone around to tell youmore about it. This app fulfils that gap.Our idea is that you walk around the heritage locations of yourcity using our app. Therefore, we have crafted the various routesthat you can take as heritage tours on foot. Each location en routeis located on the map, with text and audio notes on its history andgeneral significance.This is a small tribute to the rich historic past of our cityand by using it you encourage our efforts. The Music Academy, Madras is a landmarkinstitution in the history of the fine arts of India. Founded in1928, and located in the southern metropolis of Chennai (formerlyMadras) it was an outcome of a music conference that was held inconjunction with the All India Congress Session in Madras city theprevious year. It was conceived to be the institution that wouldset the standard for Carnatic music, the classical music form ofSouth India. In the process, it began in 1929 the practice ofhosting annual conferences on music, which in turn spawned theDecember music festival of Madras, now acclaimed as one of thelargest cultural events of the world – over 60 organisations stage2000 performances between mid November and early January, allshowcasing the classical arts, and entirely funded and supported byprivate initiative. Recognised as a cultural icon of India, theMusic Academy’s functioning has, in its 87 years of existence, beenentirely through voluntary effort.
