Description

Far Cry 4 is an open worldaction-adventurefirst-person shooter video game developed byUbisoft Montreal andpublished by Ubisoft for the PlayStation 3,PlayStation 4, Xbox360, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows. It is thesuccessor to the2012 video game Far Cry 3, and the fourth maininstallment in theFar Cry series. The game was released on November18, 2014.

The game takes place in Kyrat, a fictional Himalayan countrythatmostly consists of sprawling mountains and forests, vastwatersystems, and villages. The main story follows Ajay Ghale, ayoungKyrati-American, as he is caught in a civil war involvingKyrat'sRoyal Army, controlled by tyrannical king Pagan Min, and arebelmovement called the Golden Path. Gameplay focuses on combatandexploration; players battle enemy soldiers and dangerouswildlifeusing a wide array of weapons, while completing sidemissions,collecting useful items, and progressing through thegame's mainstory. The game features many elements found inrole-playing games,such as a branching storyline. In addition tothe game's campaign,the game features a map editor, a co-operativemultiplayer mode,and an asymmetrical competitive multiplayer modewhich wasdeveloped by Red Storm Entertainment.

Announced in May 2014, development on Far Cry 4 beganimmediatelyafter the shipment of Assassin's Creed III in late2012. The teamoriginally intended to develop a direct sequel toFar Cry 3 thatcontinues 3's story, but the idea was later scrappedand the teamdecided to develop a new setting and new story for thegame. Certainaspects of Far Cry 4 were inspired by the NepaleseCivil War, andthe costume of the game's antagonist Pagan Min wasinspired byJapanese films Ichi the Killer and Brother.

Far Cry 4 was met with a mostly positive critical receptionuponrelease. Critics praised the open world design,visuals,soundtrack, and characters, particularly antagonist PaganMin.There was also praise for the new gameplay additions, such asthegrappling hook, and the wealth of content. However, somecriticsdisliked the story and found the game too similar toitspredecessor. The game was a commercial success, sellingsevenmillion copies by the end of 2014, and was the biggest launchinthe franchise's history. Several releases of downloadablecontentwere subsequently published.
