Description

Dilute performs dilution calculations from astock solution to a diluted solution. The variables are theconcentration and volume of the stock solution, and theconcentration and volume of the diluted solution. These arevisually laid out on the primary page of Dilute. Any combination ofthree of the variables may be used to calculate the fourth. Themolar mass of the solute is used for converting between molarity, mass ratio and molality. A wide range of concentration and volumeunits are available in drop down menus.

Calculations on the primary page are currently limited todilution calculations for a generic solution with a density of1.00g/mL at all concentrations. This works well for calculations inmolarity because molarity is independent of the solution density. However, both mass ratio (%, ppt, ppm and ppb) and molality aredensity dependent. In order to minimize the error in for mass ratioand molality, calculations are limited to concentrations below 5%by mass. At that limit most calculations will be accurate to withina few percent. The accuracy improves for lower concentrations, asthe density of the solution approaches that of the puresolvent.

Swipe from right to left to view the second page. This pagecontains concentration and density data for solutions of aceticacid. Concentration calculations are limited only by theconcentration and density data programmed into the app. The upperconcentration limit, for calculations with acetic acid, is shown inmolarity and mass percent to the right of the chemical formula andmolar mass. The density of the stock and diluted solutions areautomatically calculated as shown in the following figure to theleft.

Future versions of this app will include density-concentrationdata for a variety of solutions including common acids and basessuch as hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, sulfuric acid, ammnoiumhydroxide and sodium hydroxide. Other improvements such as userdefined solution densities, significant digit control, and specialformatting for tablets are also scheduled.

This is an extension of a project that I began some years agowhen I wrote a number of applications for Palm OS. These included adilution calculator, pH and buffer calculators, mass spectroscopycalculator, as well as physics and weather apps.

I have just begun converting these apps to the Android OS.Dilute is the first.
