BiographyBill Withers (born July 4, 1938 in Slab Fork, West Virginia)isan American singer-songwriter who performed and recorded fromthelate 1960s until the mid 1980s.Bill's father died when he was thirteen. He joined the US Navyatseventeen, and stayed there for nine years, before he moved toLosAngeles in 1967. While in Los Angeles, he worked full-time inaLockheed assembly plant in the day, recording demo tapesandperforming in juke joints during the night. When he debuted onthemusic scene with "Ain't No Sunshine," he refused to give up hisjobat Lockheed because of his belief that the music business wasafickle industry and that he was still a novice compared tootherworking acts like The Temptations or Sammy Davis, Jr.His first success was with the company Sussex Records in1971with his debut hit single Ain't No Sunshine on the album JustAs IAm. He assembled a touring band made up of: drummer JamesGadson,guitarist Bernoce Blackmon, keyboardist Ray Jackson, andbassistMelvin Dunlap.His second album Still Bill also did well on the charts. Itwasrecorded during a break in the "Just As I Am" tour and includedthewell-known single "Lean on Me," which went to #1 on the chartsonJuly 8, 1972. BiographyBlue Öyster Cult is a renowned hard rock band that formed in1967in Long Island, New York, United States. BiographyJefferson Airplane was a psychedelic rock group formed inSanFrancisco. It was the first of several Bay Area psychedelicgroupsof the 1960s to become internationally known. The band wasfoundedby singer Marty Balin and guitarist Paul Kantner in 1965.With theaddition of Signe Anderson, their male-female singing styleshowedtheir folk music roots plus Balin's love of R&B singingstyles.In fact their dual lead vocals were a hallmark of theirsoundthroughout the Airplane's career, as confirmed (tointernationalacclaim) after Grace Slick replaced Signe Anderson asthe femalesinger. BiographyThe Allman Brothers Band formed in 1969 in Macon, Georgia,UnitedStates and blended different strains of Southern Rockrelated music—Blues, Country, Gospel, Jazz, and more— into aflexible,jam-oriented Rock and Roll style. Reflecting theemergence of the"New South" and setting the style for LynyrdSkynyrd, the MarshallTucker Band, and many other bands, the AllmanBrothers Band alsooddly— or eerily, some would say— had an unusualstring of untimelydeaths, a pattern similar to other Southernrockers. Throughpersonal tragedy and turmoil, the group enduredfor decades.Reaching the peak of their commercial clout in theearly 70s, theywere highly respected and well received by legionsof fans. BiographyDion Francis DiMucci (b July 18, 1939), better known as Dion,isan Italian-American singer-songwriter now widely recognized asoneof the top vocalists of his era, blending the best elementsofdoo-wop, traditional pop, and rnb styles, as well as aforerunnerin the development of rock and roll.Early yearsDion was born to an Italian-American family in the Bronxboroughof New York City. As a child, he used to accompany hisfather, avaudeville entertainer, on tour, and developed a love ofcountrymusic – particularly Hank Williams – and the blues anddoo-wopstars he heard in local bars and on the radio. Hissingingabilities were honed on the street corners of CrotonaAvenue, wherehe rounded up other local singers inventing acapellalicks, and inlocal clubs.In early 1957 he auditioned for Bob and Gene Schwartz, whohadjust formed Mohawk Records. They recorded him with a vocalgroup,The Timberlanes, and released a single "The Chosen Few",arrangedby Hugo Montenegro, which became a minor regional hit.With the Belmonts, 1957-1960Schwartz also signed up Dion's friends, The Belmonts, namedafternearby Belmont Avenue. Their breakthrough together came inearly1958, when "I Wonder Why" made # 22 on the national UScharts,followed up with "No One Knows" and "Don’t Pity Me" whichwere alsochart hits.This success won Dion and the Belmonts a place on the"WinterDance Party" tour with Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and theBigBopper. On 2 February 1959, after playing at Clear Lake, Iowa,Diondecided that he could not afford the $36 cost of a flight tothenext venue . The plane crashed, and Holly and the other starswerekilled.In March 1959, Dion and the Belmonts’ next single, "A TeenagerInLove", was released, making # 5 in the US pop charts and # 28 intheUK. Their biggest hit, "Where or When", was released inNovember1959, and reached #3 on the US charts. However, in early1960, Dionchecked in to hospital for heroin addiction, a problemhe had hadsince his mid-teens. Further single releases for thegroup that yearwere less successful, there were musical andfinancial differencesbetween Dion and members of the Belmonts, andin October 1960 Diondecided to quit for a solo career.Solo stardom, 1960-19641961 album coverBy the end of 1960, Dion had recordedandreleased his first solo album, Alone With Dion, and thesingle"Lonely Teenager", which rose to # 12 in the US charts.Follow-ups"Havin’ Fun" and "Kissin’ Game" had less success, and thesignswere that Dion would drift onto the cabaret circuit. However,hethen recorded, with new vocal group the Del-Satins, anup-temponumber co-written with Ernie Maresca. BiographyGrandmaster Flash (born Joseph Saddler on January 1, 1958inBarbados) is a hip hop musician and DJ; one of the pioneersofhip-hop DJing, cutting, and mixing.Saddler's family migrated to the United States, and he grew upinthe Bronx. He became involved in the earliest Queensbridge, NewYorkDJ scene, attending parties set up by early luminaries.Learningfrom Pete Jones and Kool Herc, he used duplicate copies ofa singlerecord and two turntables but added a dextrous manual editwith amixer to promote the break (a point of isolated drum rhythm)- theordinary playing of the record would be interrupted tooverlay thebreak, the break could be repeated by using the mixerto switchchannels while the second record was spun back. The speedanddexterity needed showed why Saddler was called Flash, althoughhegot the nickname in school due to the fact that he hung aroundwithanother guy named Gordon (from Flash Gordon). He also inventedthetechnique initially called cutting, which was developed byGrandWizard Theodore into scratching (AMG).Flash played illegal parties and also worked with rappers suchasKurtis Blow and Lovebug Starski. He formed his own group in thelate1970s, after promptings from Ray Chandler. The initial memberswereCowboy (Keith Wiggins), Melle Mel (Melvin Glover) and Kid(d)Creole(Nathaniel Glover) making Grandmaster Flash & the 3 MCs.Twoother rappers briefly joined, but they were replacedmorepermanently by Rahiem (Guy Todd Williams, previously in theFunkyFour) and Scorpio (Eddie Morris, also used the name Mr. Ness)tocreate Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five. They performed at Disco Feverinthe Bronx beginning in 1978.Signed to Sugar Hill Records in 1980 by Joe Robinson,theyreleased numerous singles, gaining a gold disc for "Freedom,"andalso toured. The classic "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flashonthe Wheels of Steel," released in 1981 was the best displayoftheir skills (combining elements of Queen's "Another One BitestheDust", Chic's "Good Times" and samples from Blondie's Rapture),butit was their least successful single at the time. The group'smostsignificant hit was "The Message" (1982), which was producedbyin-house Sugar Hill producer Clifton "Jiggs" Chase andwentplatinum in less than a month. BiographyDel Shannon (30 December 1934–8 February 1990) (bornCharlesWeedon Westover in Coopersville, Michigan) was an Americanrock androller who launched into fame with the No. 1 hit "Runaway"(1961)which introduced the musitron, an early form of thesynthesizerplayed by "Runaway" co-writer and keyboard player MaxCrook.Shannon followed up with "Hats Off to Larry", another bighit,and the less popular "So Long, Baby", another song ofbreakupbitterness. "Little Town Flirt", released in 1962 reached#12 in1963 as did the album of the same name. After these hits,Shannonwas unable to keep his momentum in the US, but became asensationin England. In 1963, he became the first American artistto recorda cover version of a Beatles song with "From Me toYou".Shannon returned to the charts in 1964 with "Handy Man", "DoYouWanna Dance", "Keep Searchin'", and "Stranger in Town" (1965),withthe latter two songs themed about flight from pursuit inadangerous world. A 1966 chart offering was Shannon's cover oftheRolling Stones' "Under My Thumb". In the late 1960s after adryspell of hits, he turned to production. In 1969 he discoveredagroup called Smith and arranged their hit "Baby It's You". Hethenproduced his friend Brian Hyland's million seller "Gypsy Woman"in1970.In the 1970s, Shannon's career slowed down greatly; the hatesandfears he had turned into art in his earlier songs were turningintofull-blown mental illness, and he was self-medicating withalcohol.He finally put the bottle down in 1978, and he was able toreturn tomainstream audiences with "Sea of Love" in the early1980s from thealbum "Drop Down And Get Me" produced by TomPetty.In December, 1983, Shannon served as Grand Marshal oftheCoopersville, Michigan Christmas parade and also performedabenefit concert at Coopersville High School.Shannon enjoyed a resurgence in audience interestafterre-recording a portion of his song "Runaway" (with new lyrics)asthe theme for the television program Crime Story. ProducerMichaelMann felt that this was one of the definitive songs of theera inwhich the program was set. Some fans of the show prefer thesharperlyrics ("Some live, and others die") as an alternate totheoriginal words.On 8 February 1990, while working on a comeback album withJeffLynne of Electric Light Orchestra, Shannon fatally shot himselfinthe head with a .22 calibre rifle. His wife thought his deathmighthave been related to his recent use of the prescriptiondrugProzac. Originally namedWarsaw, theband consisted of Ian Curtis (vocals and occasionalguitar),Bernard Sumner (guitar and keyboards), Peter Hook (bassguitar andbacking vocals) and Stephen Morris (drums andpercussion). The banddissolved in May 1980 after the suicide of itslead singer, IanCurtis. Much of their popularity/reputationarguably resulted fromfrequent playings on air by iconic DJ JohnPeel, but it is easy nowto overlook the impact that the firstalbum, Unknown Pleasures, hadon post-punk music at the time, asreference the number ofprominent bands that cited this album as aninfluence. BiographyCharles Hardin Holley (born in Lubbock, Texas, USA on 7September1936 – 3 February 1959) was an American singer-songwriterand apioneer of rock and roll. The change of spelling of "Holley"to"Holly" came about because of an error in a contract he wasasked tosign, listing him as Buddy Holly. That spelling was thenadopted forhis professional career.Although his success lasted only a year and a half beforehisdeath in an airplane crash, Holly is described by critic BruceEderas "the single most influential creative force in early rockandroll." BiographyLittle Richard (born Richard Wayne Penniman, December 5, 1932inMacon, Georgia, United States) is an American singer,songwriter,and pianist, and an early pioneer of rock 'n' roll,influencinggenerations of R&B and rock artists. Many of hisfans haveproclaimed Richard as The Real King of Rock 'n' Roll (inreferenceto the deceased Elvis Presley, who's known by the moniker"The Kingof Rock 'n' Roll"). He has also been called the King ofRockin 'n'Rollin, Rhythm & Blues Soulin'. His originalinjection of funkinto the rock and roll beat in the mid-1950's alsohad a profoundinfluence on the development of that genre ofmusic.One of twelve children, Little Richard grew up in aSeventh-dayAdventist family, but he mostly attended the New HopeBaptistChurch in Macon, Georgia (Turner, Hungry for Heaven, p. 19).Healso attended Holiness/Pentacostal churches of the U.S.South,where he learned Gospel music. He learned to play the pianoandtried to sing gospel music, but he was rejected from somechurchesfor screaming the hymns. His father Charles "Bud" Pennimanwas apreacher who sold moonshine on the side. In the winter of 1952hisfather was murdered and he returned to Macon to perform thebluesat the Tick Tock Club in the evening while washing dishes atthecafeteria of a Greyhound bus station during the day.
