The universe of the Game of Life is aninfinitetwo-dimensional orthogonal grid of square cells, each ofwhich is inone of two possible states, alive or dead. Every cellinteracts withits eight neighbours, which are the cells that arehorizontally, vertically, or diagonally adjacent. At each step intime, thefollowing transitions occur:Any live cell with fewer than two live neighbours dies, asifcaused by under-population.Any live cell with two or three live neighbours lives on to thenextgeneration.Any live cell with more than three live neighbours dies, as ifbyovercrowding.Any dead cell with exactly three live neighbours becomes alivecell, as if by reproduction. The initial pattern constitutes the seed of the system. Thefirstgeneration is created by applying the above rulessimultaneously toevery cell in the seed—births and deaths occursimultaneously, andthe discrete moment at which this happens issometimes called atick (in other words, each generation is a purefunction of thepreceding one). The rules continue to be appliedrepeatedly tocreate further generations.
