The player begins thegame witha certain number of extra lives and a life gauge whichdepletes asthe player takes hits, and must complete each stagewithin a timelimit. One life is lost if either the life gauge ortimer reacheszero, or if the player character falls off the bottomof the screenor into a hole, river, or bed of spikes.Certain enemies carry melee weapons, which can be knocked outoftheir hands and picked up to use against them.
