Nomission isimpossible for young men in Scouting!The mission of Peterloon 2016 is to challenge our Scoutswithpersonal and team challenges that demand strength andskill,exhibitions that test their perseverance and intellect, andavariety of activities that are purely fun and entertaining.With the popularity of Peterloon 2014’s expansion intoCampFriedlander, Sub-Camp Zero is back and bigger than 2014, andwithover 5,500 Scouts and Scouters everywhere on the DanBeardReservation, we will continue to expand activities at thelake,shooting sports complex, and throughout the camp.--- Peterloon History ---Once every two years the Dan Beard Council calls all BoyScoutsto the banks of the Little Miami River for a unique gathering–Peterloon, the longest continuously operating camporee inthehistory of Scouting - a council tradition since 1927.Back in 1927, the first Peterloon took place at PeterloonFarm,the estate of a prominent Cincinnati family, the Emerys. Overtheyears, the event kept the name, even after moving tootherlocations, such as a county park and a local airport. By1965,Peterloon was located at the Dan Beard Scout Reservation LowerCampCraig, where it has been held ever since.The first event was created so that Scouts could make theirowncamping equipment and do more camping as a patrol on anovernightbasis. In 1927, 300 Scouts and leaders participated in thefirstcamporee. Peterloon has retained a reputation for itsfundamentalapproach to patrol competition, hands on experiences,and outdoorfun in the scouting traditions.Some memories that the Council still talks about include the1967Peterloon, where pro football star quarterback Fran Tarkentontosseda football to astronaut John Glenn at the Saturday eveningcampfire.Another year, the opening ceremony dazzled theparticipants withred, white, and blue aerial fireworks set off atthe "rockets' redglare" part in the national anthem. They werefollowed by red andwhite aerial fireworks during the playing ofthe Canadian nationalanthem, in honor of the many visitingCanadian troops. OtherPeterloon ceremonies have featured a massingof the flags, includingas many as 200 unit flags crossing thearena area. Such is thepageantry that each Peterloon has tooffer.Since the mid-1950's Peterloon has been held every otheryear.Waiting two years for the next event increases anticipationasparticipants look forward to what for many is both a celebrationofScouting and a reunion for scouts of all ages.
