Shree Ramcharitmanas (श्रीरामचरितमानस) is an epic inAwadhi, composed by the 16th-century poet Goswami Tulsidas(c.1532–1623).Ramcharitmanas literally means "lake of the deeds ofRama".Tulsidas compared the seven Kāndas of the epic to sevenstepsleading into the holy waters of a Himalayan lake (Mānasa, asinLake Manasarovar) which purifies the body and the soul at once.Thecore of the work is a poetic retelling of the events oftheSanskrit epic Ramayana, centred on the narrative of Rama, thecrownprince of Ayodhya. The epic is also called TulsikritRamayan(literally, The Ramayan composed by Tulsi or, loosely, TheRamayanof Tulsidas). Tulsidas began writing the scripture inAvadhpuri,Ayodhya in Vikram Samvat 1631 (1574 CE), during the reignof Akbar(1556-1605 CE). The exact date is stated within the poem asbeingthe ninth day of the month of Chaitra, which is the birthdayofRam, Ram Navami.
