The Community-based Skills AssessmentSurvey(CSA)The challenges associated with the transition fromschoolservices to adulthood for individuals with autism arewelldocumented. Every individual with autism is different and asaresult, there is no "one size fits all" plan for the pathtoadulthood. The most important factor in creating a plan is tofocuson the individual. His or her strengths, needs, challengesandpreferences will play a critical role in ensuring asuccessfultransition process.To help with the transition planning process, AutismSpeaksworked with Virginia Commonwealth University'sRehabilitationResearch and Training Center to design the Communitybased SkillAssessment Survey (CSA), which aims to help parentsandprofessionals assess the current skill levels and abilitiesofindividuals with autism beginning at age 12 and continuingintoadulthood in order to develop a comprehensive plan.The CSA is the first tool to assess needs in the areaofcommunity-based living, from transportation to financialmanagementto peer relationships and more. The tool is divided intothreelevels based upon the age of the individual being assessed.Eightcritical areas of functional life skills will be assessed:Career path and employmentSelf-determination/advocacyHealth and safetyPeer relationships, socialization and social communicationCommunity participation and personal financeTransportationLeisure/recreationHome living skillsThe assessment uses both a criterion-based observationandinterview-based process to measure the individual'sknowledge,skills and behaviors.This application was developed by Identifor and provided asafree service to Autism Speaks and the broader community.Thisautomates the survey process and enables easy use of the toolbyprofessionals and individuals with autism. The Autism SpeaksandVirginia Commonwealth University Logos are used with permissionofthe respective institutions.
